Ok, let me put it this way. Money does not grow on trees, it's printed. In order for drilling companies in america to stay in business, somebody has to buy that oil that they are producing. If nobody is buying that oil, the workers don't get payed and in turn the companies go bankrupt. If the companies go bankrupt and there is no more workers to drill the oil, the US has an oil shortage now. From here they can do either two things, They can print money to pay these workers and bail them out, inflating our economy and currency to possible hyper inflation or we can just invade saudi arabia who has tons of oil stockpiled and low costs as a nation(since they are a small country relative to the USA). The amount of oil Saudis need is nowhere near as much oil as USA needs to function.

saudi's made it go to negative, it's planned. this is to make USA struggle financially with its already declining economy. They purposefully flooded the markets today with tons of oil supply for nothing, so that USA can't make money off oil. Since the futures are negatives, saudis can refuse any price given for oil, and USA will just have to suffer. Production stop might be more costly in the long run than giving away the oil/selling at cost for a while waiting for things to stabilize.
Rate of inflation depends if the "hold out" strategy works to get oil out of producers hands to nudge and kick the economic system into gear, it requires middle men to process and customers to buy as well.
