He is right. I have come to similar conclusions backtesting my own TA. The stop losses don't add any advantage mainly because when your stop hits it's usually going to be near low of day at the worst possible place to sell. However, there are two important uses for stop losses I still regularly utilize. 1. Say I want to sell at open for some reason, maybe worried about a bad news release that came out after hours, but I don't want to sell if stock decides not to respond to that news. So I put the stop a little below the previous day's close and see what happens. 2. When trading high risk shit I have zero fundamental faith in. I'll trade dumpster fires but those get the stop loss treatment always.

One caveat: if you're a beginner trying to swing trade but also subscribe the to TA is bullshit and doesn't work mentality. If you fit that description, use a goddamn stop loss. The whole point of TA in practice is to get an idea of trend likely to continue (so buy) or trouble might be brewing (sell a portion or all). If you do not use a stop and you have a bad system for making entry and exit decisions, you may ride a bearish trend all the way down and panic sell it way lower than you would if you had set a stop to begin with.

If I set stop losses I would have lost gains because it's always bounced back and is very hard to get back as low as I originally did. Sure oil, stocks can be sold at a small loss and be grabbed for cheaper, but I guess it depends on the industry.

I have an account because of a past employer, but now I sold all the stocks and am moving to Canada. Should I apply for an international account or just close it and get another broker?

I have basically no experience with the stock market but I'd like to learn.

Theoretically yes. In reality? Well, the reason I have attempted to long oil during its corona crash and price war is something as important as the oil industry does not have lengthy periods of inaction by the interested parties. As this progresses I expect stuff like economic sanctions, tariffs, port blockades, war; any or all of that. It will not go to zero. But I will not ride it down the whole way to wherever it may be headed. I will continue attempting entries as best as I can read the trading action on it, probably lose some more money, eventually it'll be the right time.

Callon Petroleum (NYSE:CPE) says it received notice from the NYSE that the average closing price of its common shares had fallen below $1/share over 30 consecutive trading days.

Callon says it plans to offer a proposal for a reverse stock split in connection with its annual shareholders meeting.

The company also reports preliminary Q1 production of 100K-102K boe/day (63% oil).

Callon says it plans to expand capital spending cuts beyond its previously announced 27% reduction to $700M-725M without offering specifics for now, and will target an additional $15M-20M of cash G&A cost reductions for a total decrease of 40% from combined 2019 levels.

The company's CEO will cut his salary by 20% and his total target cash compensation by 35%, while all other officers also will reduce their total target cash compensation.

It was back in early November 2019 that I told investors to sell shares of Chesapeake Energy (CHK) before a reverse split came. The company had just issued a going concern warning, which sent shares below $1.00 and brought into question NYSE listing requirements. Despite the company engaging in a very positive debt deal in December, oil and gas prices have plunged since then, resulting in the reverse split finally happening this week.

It's hard to diversify to international stocks and bonds when the S&P has been killing it, plus infinite QE and low interest rates seem to favor growth stocks. Plan to rebalance at 40 years old. What do you think?

how do you decide when to exit a trade in that case? what do you do if the price spikes against you? if stop loss hunting is so lucrative and is used for the majority of the day (besides the first and last half hour), maybe i should just look into using a stop loss trap strategy myself, idk.
