>I used to always put in stop loss orders.
>It was just part of the trade.
>I would enter a trade and then immediately put in a stop loss order.
>It was as second nature to me as slipping my little pinkies into soft slippers before touching the hard, cold, tile on the bathroom floor in the morning.
>But I was getting stopped a lot so started to pay more attention.
>I would watch my stop loss order being filled then, in pure and utter amazement, watch the price reverse course and take on the characteristics of the Dukes of Hazzard running from Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane.
>I was immobilized with a feeling of a bride left at the altar. I was just as angry as the aforementioned bride would have been so I set out to answer the question:
What the heck was happening?
>Here is Bruce Robinson’s response when I posed the question to him (Bruce is also a personal friend of Howard Bandy’s ).
>“Early on, I did quite a bit of testing with stop-loss orders (and trailing stops as well). My conclusion was that they hurt the results of the vast majority (almost all) trading systems, or resulted in over-fitting of stop parameters. So, I decided not to use them, and not to incorporate the option into systems. I later confirmed this with others. Howard (Bandy), for example, also says that they almost always hurt performance.
>Please note the above statement is talking about perfectly executed stops where:
>-other participants such as brokerages or ECN’s did not have knowledge of stop points
>-stops were triggered by executed order prices
>In practice, stops perform even worse because the above two conditions do not hold true.”
>I’m sure I’m getting some head nods in agreement, however, I’m just as sure there are more out there ready to tar and feather me who still believe stop losses are as necessary as the air you breathe. If you are in the latter category, please read on.

Is he right? SLbros, i don't feel so good...

>Is he right?
He is right. I have come to similar conclusions backtesting my own TA. The stop losses don't add any advantage mainly because when your stop hits it's usually going to be near low of day at the worst possible place to sell. However, there are two important uses for stop losses I still regularly utilize. 1. Say I want to sell at open for some reason, maybe worried about a bad news release that came out after hours, but I don't want to sell if stock decides not to respond to that news. So I put the stop a little below the previous day's close and see what happens. 2. When trading high risk shit I have zero fundamental faith in. I'll trade dumpster fires but those get the stop loss treatment always.

One caveat: if you're a beginner trying to swing trade but also subscribe the to TA is bullshit and doesn't work mentality. If you fit that description, use a goddamn stop loss. The whole point of TA in practice is to get an idea of trend likely to continue (so buy) or trouble might be brewing (sell a portion or all). If you do not use a stop and you have a bad system for making entry and exit decisions, you may ride a bearish trend all the way down and panic sell it way lower than you would if you had set a stop to begin with.

Theoretically yes. In reality? Well, the reason I have attempted to long oil during its corona crash and price war is something as important as the oil industry does not have lengthy periods of inaction by the interested parties. As this progresses I expect stuff like economic sanctions, tariffs, port blockades, war; any or all of that. It will not go to zero. But I will not ride it down the whole way to wherever it may be headed. I will continue attempting entries as best as I can read the trading action on it, probably lose some more money, eventually it'll be the right time.

I'm considering selling out when it pumps, then buying back in when it plunges. I was buying to the bottom because it was historically cheap, planning to hold for 1-3 years for the eventual moon, but I just don't see how it can't go lower. We've got an oversupply crisis and a demand crisis, aside from a tariff, how can it not?
Is Trump willing to be the guy who pumped gas prices up by imposing a tariff in election year? I think it depends on how his support base looks in states where oil companies are big. If he thinks he can take losses there, he might not.
Zero or negative oil is ridiculous though. No actor involved is dumb enough to let that happen.

That's what I did, but I closed them at quarter past three when we were pumping instead of dumping because they weren't far out on the expiration. I bought a few more at the sharp resistance before close expiring next month, but now I'm nervous because Jews are writing articles about how this retarded drug from a literally who company with basically no proof of efficacy is going to save the world. Normalfags are way too dumb to understand that early results in an essentially uncontrolled trial are not evidence that a drug works, and these small biotech companies are basically hopium scams. So now I'm thinking I should have done a strangle because for all I know it could open with a 10% gap up on Monday and pump all week, then when eventually people realize it's a scam it might just fucking crab rather than dump. Because this market has no logic.

the stock price is defined by the people of the market. They evaluate how much the company will earn/grow in the future. It's an investment.
The market expects christmas to be a shopping spree, they expect certain holidays to benefit certain industries.
It is erroneous to think that you can time the market correctly this way.
The only swings that day may result from people thinking like you. And those swings won't help you a lot if you don't time the dump really precisely.

People make the mistake of tying TA and PA into one bundle when they're almost always separate.

People are daily making insane amounts of money on horrendous tirefire companies.

One approach isn't superior to the other. It just depends on what you are trading and sticking to your plan.

Know what you are and what your product is. That's infinitely more important than timing everything right or trying to know the literal future.

I am going to say this the last time. BUY TANKERS. its the only sure profit through oil. I get the buy and hold but this run with tankers will be ridiculous. FRO will give a sweet dividend too. Buy stock, buy calls. Oil WILL drop further, it will wipe out all small profits. You will know when to buy oil, trust me. THe oil trade seems like a no brainer, and that is why it is a no go yet. I can go on an on but ill spare you the shit. Shale will consolidate. So you will have your exxon and shit and you will have some major shale plays, no little guys. Full face. I have six P100 filters, which are good for many, many hours. They last until it becomes difficult to draw a breath through them, and they actually become more and more effective at filtration as they're used. With disposables you have to be worried about the entire mask being contaminated once used, and if you use it for too long then you'll get more air going around the mask rather than through it. A real reusable respirator has a rubber seal which prevents this. Usually a worker can get a week or two of using a dual cartridge mask for several hours a day before needing to replace them, but it depends on the level of particulates in the environment. Going in Walmart you could probably get 60-80 hours out of a pair.

Fundamentals have totally slipped. Companies are overvalued and have largely stagnated. Basically nothing has increased in profitability since '12, and asset pool expansion is dubious because a lot of companies were performing buybacks. Massive irrationality, too, there really has been nonstop bad news. The re-opening is soft, and it's just going to cause a pop in numbers. It was back in early November 2019 that I told investors to sell shares of Chesapeake Energy (CHK) before a reverse split came. The company had just issued a going concern warning, which sent shares below $1.00 and brought into question NYSE listing requirements. Despite the company engaging in a very positive debt deal in December, oil and gas prices have plunged since then, resulting in the reverse split finally happening this week.

my main question is what can market makers see in regards to stop losses? i've heard everything from they can't see them to they can see them even trailing stops to they can see hard stops but not trailing stops. i want to know wtf im dealing with here, i feel like you need stops to protect yourself from spikes. look at this for example, it's confusing what's real and what's a lie:

>This is a really interesting question, I had to do some research, and talked to a guy on a trading desk to get a definitive answer.
>Stop loss orders with a fixed price, are sent to the market, (edit:) but they are NOT visible on the public order book, however, there is no way to view that such an order is specifically a stop-loss, it just shows up as a vanilla order to sell, at whatever price. Algorithms, and anyone really, can view the order book and potentially see a big mess of sell orders at some price and move to trigger them but they will not necessarily know that they are stop-loss orders because they only appear as vanilla sells (or buys).
>With something even fancier, like trailing-stops, rather than constantly canceling and replacing the order, your broker sits on it until the trailing stop is formally triggered, then the order is sent to the open market.

>EDIT: Ok I had to go ask a few more people to clarify things.
>Basic stop loss orders are sent to the exchanges, but they are NOT visible publicly in any capacity, and they become market orders when triggered.
>Fancy stop loss orders (trailing stops) are held inside the broker until triggered rather than being constantly cancelled and replaced.
>Your stop loss orders are safe from prying eyes.

I know at least some of /biz/ invests long term. Trying to figure out my IRA allocations. 27 years old, agressive outlook:

30% Large Cap Blend
20% Mid Cap Blend
20% Small Cap Growth
10% International
5% Emerging
10% Long Term Treasury Bonds
5% Gold, Cash, REIT

It's hard to diversify to international stocks and bonds when the S&P has been killing it, plus infinite QE and low interest rates seem to favor growth stocks. Plan to rebalance at 40 years old. What do you think?

my idea was that i should use trailing stops instead of hard stops, since the brokerage doesn't keep canceling and recreating the stop but instead holds onto it until it gets triggered, thus making it "invisible" to people who can buy that data. i was thinking of something like 1.5x the ATR for a trailing stop with a scale out point of 1x the ATR to sell half my shit, thoughts? then just let the trailing stop ride out the trend until it either gets popped or my indicators tell me to get out early.
