If we include those, we also need to include things like reverse splits and a million other things that new posters ask about every thread
even if we put a link, no one would read it, and even if they did read it, they might not really understand it
it's a tough problem, but as things are we just have to accept (especially in times like these) that we will have a lot of thread discussion by people who don't understand the basics. There really is no perfect solution, the best solution IMO is just trying to encourage people to search for information and learn themselves, instead of wasting tons of time trying to correct them (while they argue with you...)
I think it was Yeats or someone who said "Education is not the filling of a bucket, but the lighting of a fire". You're not going to be able to help very many people by trying to spoonfeed them financial information little by little, it's completely sisyphean.

Starbucks employee. I'll offer insights. Maybe this can help with 'scuttlebutt.'

Pros:
>All employees were offered a 30 day off period with FULL pay called catastrophe pay because of Corona.
>Those who stayed got a +2 or +3 dollar hourly pay increase
>We get a 5% match 401k, even lowly baristas
>We regularly get free stocks in the company called RSUs which 'mature' once or twice a year.
>we get a free bag of beans once a week
>we get free food on shift and free drinks
>we get tips
>even during our 30 day off period, we're allowed to come by and get free food (once a day I think)

Translation: The company takes care of its employees abnormally well. Like really well.

Cons:
>The beans are shitty and we're becoming more of a frappuccino place. We don't use elite ingredients or anything
>high turnover because the job requires a lot of hard labor
>regular understaffing is a huge issue, making competing for hours rather brutal. Corporate gives us less hours than the store requires and the manager has to ration them, playing favorites in the process
>Baristas are trained to make drinks fast, not well. Cappuccinos are just bubble baths, for instance. We're a fast food coffee place that charges at real coffee place prices. Not competitive IMO.
>Because of prices being high and quality being fast food-tier, local places like McDonalds and Dunkin' are starting to offer our exact menu but cheaper. This is a legitimate threat if they get brand awareness for this menu.
>it's really hard to fire people.

Our pike place is like dirty bean water. Just buy some blonde or medium roast beans and we'll grind them for free for you. Just use that. Also it's rarely kept fresh if I'm not on the front counter.

Pike and Dark Roast (our standards) are over roasted as fuck but we really go have a good selection on the shelf. Even our espresso beans are over roasted because we're at the point where our menu has so much sugar that we have to burn it darker so people at least taste some coffee.

Also, lighter roasts of coffee will have the most caffeine. When you roast beans, you burn out the caffeine as well as other oils. Minimally roasted beans have more, which is any 'blonde' beans.

Full retirement is possible after 27 years. You start at age 18, at 45 you can walk out drawing a full pension till your dead. There's little "loopholes" in those retirement regs also that can be exploited by you. Sick time, you can use it as service credit to decrease the time served yet still hit the full 27 yr mark or to increase the pension amount yet only work 27 years. Any vacation time you have they pay you for when you retire. Any vacation time over 240 hrs gets dumped over into your sick time. Vacation time increases as the years pass. At year 20 your earning 2 full days a month. State holidays, plus they pay you 4 hrs to vote during elections, etc. So I go vote, then I get 3.5 hrs to do whatever.

Three things.
1) Lower the prices to a competitive level
2) Start using ice cream in our fraps and not just whole milk, ice, flavor syrup, and emulsifier. Real milk shakes are blended ice cream and milk. Chick-Fil-A has great ones for this reason.

are you really feeling any less customer traffic that you think is attributable to prices?
I don't go to starbucks, but just driving by the nearby locations I always see cars parked outside and lined up at the drivethrough
It really does feel like most of the current starbucks customers are fine paying the higher price (I don't even know how much, $5-10 for a coffee?) instead of getting cheaper brands. I mean, if they were going to switch to McDonalds coffee they would have done it in 2018 or 2019, if they're still drinking starbucks they probably won't stop.

>>18490558
is Starbucks especially restrictive about this, or are they just toeing the same legal lines that everywhere else has to deal with? AFAIK, it isn't easy to fire people anywhere. We closed our lobbies and all cafe-only stores. So drive thru SBux are the only places around currently to get SBux and ONLY through the drive-thru. I don't think we're losing customers yet, but there's an age demographic for the menu.

Older people will get lattes, brewed coffee, etc.
Younger people will get refreshers, frapps, and any really sugary drink. At a guess, the younger gen will be a growing market and so will their taste in drinks. If they can get the exact same one elsewhere for cheaper, it's a problem down the line and all we have left is an aging customer base.

We keep busy during non-pandemic times, but there's a nearby Chick-Fil-A that is wrapped around the store 24/7. We're never like that but we could be.

those people are completely un-fireable for now

I think that more and more people are learning about this, it's really the most important life-hack of the past several years. If you get a decent job that pays well, just grow your hair long and tell your boss that you want to be called Melissa.

You see it especially in the high-paying, high stress jobs in silicon valley. Filled with trannies. Most of those people weren't hired as trannies, but if you get a nice job that pays 6 figures a year with another 6 figures in vesting stock, you do what you have to do. If you want to make damn sure that you don't get replaced by a couple pajeets making 30k/year, you gotta become a Cassandra or a Caitlyn or something. Then you just slack off and put in a relaxing 30 hour work week for the next decade and retire.

Now I don't think that the Starbucks employees are doing the same thing, but they are just as impossible to fire or lay off.

The single most important factor over a lifetime of investment is not losing money.

See for example this example from this beginner's guide to investment video from Bill Ackman. He gives an example of an investment of $10,000 compounded at an annual rate of 20%, which would yield $25 million after 43 years. On the other hand, suppose that the same investor got a 20% return every year, except that every twelfth year, he suffered a loss of 50%. At the end of 43 years, that investor would be left with a mere pittance of less than $2 million.
https://youtu.be/WEDIj9JBTC8?t=1442

Does this scenario sound familiar? Investing in index funds, we can expect losses of a similar scale to this, every 12 years or so. Therefore, if the single most important factor of successful investing is not to lose money, the single most important tool of successful investing is timing the market! Timing the market is the key to ensuring long-term investment returns and a prosperous retirement.

He should have given more examples about how people lose money, how people can avoid losing money, etc., but he just kind of said " don't lose money, Warren Buffet says don't lose money", and then he moves on.

His point is that you would do better to content yourself with a moderately lower rate of return and avoid losses versus a higher rate of return but suffering significant losses at certain points. In the example from the video (and in my prior post), with those three losses, if the investor had a 13% return or more every year with no losses, he would do than having a 20% return every year except for those three setbacks. Of course, expecting a constant rate of return like either of those values year after year is probably not a realistic assumption, and likewise there's nothing preventing you from suffering significant losses more than three times over a 43-year span.

If you watch the full video, he actually does explain some simple criteria for selecting investments to lower investment risk.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEDIj9JBTC8&feature=youtu.be&t=1545

However, if you read between the lines, the key takeaway IMO is that the most important thing when investing in the market is to properly time the market, because that's the only way to avoid losses rather than merely counting on recovering from those losses.
