No. That's fallacious reasoning. The only thing that matters for whether you should buy another $1,000 worth of shares now at the present time is whether you think it's a good investment now. If it's a good prospect now, then it's good regardless of whether you already own any shares. If it's a bad prospect, then it's bad regardless of whether you own any shares. In the example, there are two lots of shares. One results in a 50% loss and the other a 5x gain. But the 50% loss and the 5x gains are independent of each other.

If you didn't own any existing shares would you buy new shares now under the current circumstances? If not, then you probably ought to sell the shares your do have and look for a better prospect. If you do think it's worth buying new shares, are there better opportunities out there? There's no rule that after a loss, you need to make your money back in the same stock.
