I've never been fully on-board the gloom and doom train. I think the economic damage is far going to outweigh the health issues. That said, the fact that this was a new virus mutation and needed to be treated as a life-or-death matter (see SARS) shouldn't be a question here. Treat it seriously, collect data as much and as quickly as possible, and then adjust policy from there.
