Wolf sees the battle against covid-19 as a three-stage process adding Pennsylvania is still in the first stage of fighting to reduce the rate of infection among the population by sheltering in place. During this time, the governor said the state still needs to build capacity so the health system is not overwhelmed by the disease. He acknowledged this has not come without “a whole host of sacrifices” — closing schools and businesses and keeping social distance from each other.

“The economy is still tanking,” as a result of the closures he ordered, Wolf noted.

The governor says the second stage, a transitional phase, will occur when there is more better testing, including tests for coronavirus antibodies to determine who is immune. Only then, will there be a reopening of society. But, “the answer is still far from perfectly clear” as to when the state will get to that transitional stage, Wolf said

In retrospect, anon might sound gloom and doom, but without the advantage of hindsight, anon's correct. The fact of the matter is that this was a new virus, with unknown long-term health consequences, unknown infection pathways, unknown R_0, unknown severity, unknown likelihood to further mutate. Given its origin as a CV and the impacts of SARS and MERS, it was prudent to take it seriously. You don't risk a public health crisis just because you think "it's just a flu." Is the economic fallout going to outweigh the health issues? Yeah, different topic, though.

This. The point of masks is that sick people are always infectious in their vicinity, but when they coof they turn stationary objects like chairs and grocery items infectious. If they wear a mask, the coof stays inside the mask, so only their vicinity is infectious. It's not hard to comprehend.

I've never been fully on-board the gloom and doom train. I think the economic damage is far going to outweigh the health issues. That said, the fact that this was a new virus mutation and needed to be treated as a life-or-death matter (see SARS) shouldn't be a question here. Treat it seriously, collect data as much and as quickly as possible, and then adjust policy from there. There's nothing wrong with an abundance of caution when you're facing a new and unknown pathogen.

Now that we know more, we can begin taking more calculated risks. But to think that we've stopped a new virus when we have no vaccine and are unsure of our levels of herd immunity is risky. A gradual roll-out is the best we can hope for without shooting ourselves in the foot, but we should still be prepared for the worst.

We are in phase three of the below.

THE COCKTAIL THEORY

If professional economists can’t predict economies and professional forecasters can’t predict markets, then what chance does the amateur investor have? You know the answer already, which brings me to my own “cocktail party” theory of market forecasting, developed over years of standing in the middle of living rooms, near punch bowls, listening to what the nearest ten people said about stocks.

In the first stage of an upward market—one that has been down awhile and that nobody expects to rise again—people aren’t talking about stocks. In fact, if they lumber up to ask me what I do for a living, and I answer, “I manage an equity mutual fund,” they nod politely and wander away. If they don’t wander away, then they quickly change the subject to the Celtics game, the upcoming elections, or the weather. Soon they are talking to a nearby dentist about plaque.

When ten people would rather talk to a dentist about plaque than to the manager of an equity mutual fund about stocks, it’s likely that the market is about to turn up.

“In stage two, after I’ve confessed what I do for a living, the new acquaintances linger a bit longer—perhaps long enough to tell me how risky the stock market is—before they move over to talk to the dentist. The cocktail party talk is still more about plaque than about stocks. The market’s up 15 percent from stage one, but few are paying attention.

In stage three, with the market up 30 percent from stage one, a crowd of interested parties ignores the dentist and circles around me all evening. A succession of enthusiastic individuals takes me aside to ask what stocks they should buy. Even the dentist is asking me what stocks he should buy. Everybody at the party has put money into one issue or another, and they’re all discussing what’s happened.
In stage four, once again they’re crowded around me—but this time it’s to tell me what stocks I should buy. Even the dentist has three or four tips, and in the next few days I look up his recommendations in the newspaper and they’ve all gone up. When the neighbors tell me what to buy and then I wish I had taken their advice, it’s a sure sign that the market has reached a top and is due for a tumble.

market loogin pretty strong, volume is decent. prolly slight pull backs on the way but as the stimuluses kick in and economy reopens it looks strong. eur having a slight bounce. many euro countries central eros and nordics opening economies now. even in italy some shops opening doors. we will see how euro zone deals with mediterranean economies, or if the currency needs to split to to regions

oil starting taking out lows now finally which is good, could push slightly even lower.

So the second wave that comes after we open up is going to be worse? With the summer, immunity, awareness, wider availability of testing, improved availability of ppe and treatment? At worst people have to go back into quarantine a few times until we find a system that can keep it contained. With such a pathetic death rate it hardly matters if we just let it play out. The worry was we wouldn't be able to contain it in the first place. We did.

Limited means like SARS and Avian Flu which spread to families and close contacts before dying out. *Sustained* human to human trasmission was established on January 20th. Don't get it twisted, the virus isn't mutating, it just had an unusually long incubation and onset period and it took time to establish many of the facts, which have not changed.

>if you fall from a ladder and have a heart attack from the shock, did you die from the ladder fall or the heart attack?
There's a million ways to write the cause of death in that scenario, but the temporal relationship cannot be ignored, and the ladder fall/injuries should be included somehow, either in cause of death, or contributory condition at least. Manner of death would then be accident, not natural, assuming no one pushed the ladder on purpose.

Of course they were worse, and the CCP was under-reporting them. That was the point I was making. And you're right, we aren't dealing with (as many) unknowns anymore. That was the other point I was making. But initially, we were still revising our own estimates because we didn't have enough data and the CCP data wasn't accurately reflecting the extent of the virus. Just because what we now know to be facts turned out to be correct doesn't mean that they couldn't have been wrong hypothesis initially. That was the final point. It took us time to establish them as correct.

Everything today. The part of 1 cent per share earnings for WFC and JPM's own struggle not scaring people. How Fauci said May reopening is overly optimistic. How JPM CEO said we won't reopen in May, like June, July, or even August. Oil dipping below 20. Gold ATM. Future earnings projected to be just as bad for all companies coming up. Q2 being INFINITELY worse than Q1 already is. Goldman Sachs saying we are looking at a coming recession 4x worse than 2008/9, and unemployment well be WORSE than the great depression. It is an open secret like half of everything will be gone and out of business in coming months, not every business will be saved yet all rise.

All of this today. The talking heads of investing gave up justifying even, now everyone is saying "fundamentals don't exist in this market, so just go with momentum and pray." I have never seen more negative news in one day about our economic outlook, and you are telling me NASDAQ is back to normal and S&P might be at this rate by EOW?
