Part of the media blitz I was talking about. You even said it yourself, it's obvious they just wanted to stay open for AC and Doom and they've even since closed down in-store operations (you can call ahead and pick up in person still, however). Reposting from previous thread. It looks like the past week represents a noticeable change in the momentum of the sell-off. It might take rather unexpected and very negative news to cause additional sharp changes to increase downward momentum and volatility as compared to what we were seeing this past month. Otherwise, I suppose it will crab along, or perhaps trend downward gradually, depending on how well markets take the negative economic data coming down the pipe.

More DOW news wire updates:
Stocks ended sharply higher Tuesday, in a rally that traders attributed to expectations lawmakers will reach a deal on a massive fiscal stimulus deal aimed at cushioning the economy from the hit it will take from the COVID-19 pandemic. The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged around 2,113 points, or 11.4%, to end near 20,705, according to preliminary figures, while the S&P 500 advanced around 210 points, or 9.4%, to close near 2,447. The Nasdaq Composite rose around 557 points to end near 7,418, a gain of 8.1%. After hitting all-time highs in February, stocks have plunged into a bear market, in an accelerated meltdown tied to fears over the impact of the coronavirus outbreak on global and economic growth.

If we're near the top bull trap, then prepare for the most insane ride down toward the bottom. The momentum in the sell-off has slowed down a bit over the past week and I think a lot of the negative sentiment/FUD has been priced in. What hasn't been priced in is the impact on unemployment numbers and earnings. I'd be surprised if those numbers cause a massive increase in volatility or another wave of panic selling like we saw the past month. It might take a sharp spike in mortality rate or infection numbers to do that. My guess is that otherwise there will be a slow downward trend until the virus and economic situation improves.

The quantitative information is likely not priced in, but the negative sentiment that's associated with the huge unemployment jump is something that's been sent out on the wire for a while now. We'll see Thursday, but people have been thinking about it for at least the past week. It might take a huge difference in expected vs. actual data to kick us into another sell-off with the same momentum we saw the past month. Otherwise, we're in the crab zone now.

>>18057381
It's not confidence, but rather expected weakness. It might result in a gradual downward trend in anticipation of forward-looking negative results across the board, as opposed to a huge sell-off.

Japan is printing money as fast as they can and they just can’t get inflation. Once people think they’ll be able to get a better price in a month, they stop buying things and the economy has a very hard time getting started. Demand goes down, prices go down, the relative value of the currency goes up.

Unlike inflation, which can be fought by raising rates, bankers don’t have tools for fighting deflation.

They recently tried increasing taxes by 10% to try to artificially increase prices and jump start some inflation. They’re desperate.

Escaping deflation may be like escaping a black hole: once you pass the event horizon, struggling is useless and it’s game over.

I strongly disagree with the "priced in" argument. Although I believe this shit is being overreacted to by a maximum extent by the sheer amount of media coverage , the economic impact that the "lock-down" regulations bring about will dent most economies. Events/restaurants in the Netherlands have been closed till the 1'st of June, which means a shit load of people will be applying for welfare and compensation without generating any revenue. Since the EU is 1/2 weeks further in this mess than the US, imagine the havoc it is going to cause there (and in less economical developed countries which are now starting on the ride) when it spreads to the same extent as it does here.

I don't think anyone that's not spouting memes is using the "priced in" argument for the quantitative effects on the economy and unemployment. What's being priced in is the fear and panic that resulted in the massive sell-off we saw. What's more likely is that, baring any significant, terrible news, markets gradually grind downward from here until we see a decrease in infections and the Western economies slowly turn on again.

I agree! But I don't think all the panic is priced in to it's full extent yet exactly, since we have not yet seen any "real" financial impacts that made corporations fall over and made people lose their jobs (apart from the "temporary unemployment"). If the US healthcare system can't keep up with the amount of patients, and when the media starts rapidly reporting on this, then I will think we will hit something like a bottom.

It's just crazy to me that governments around the world are reacting in such a manner to a virus that has a relatively low mortality rate for the general population. If the current measures are ineffective, we can actually slip into another depression like situation. Imagine what would happen if we had a virus that would be dangerous for anyone in the general population , including a higher mortality rate. If covid is already causing an impact of this size, imagine the situation if something like the Spanish flu were to strike us again.

With social media? With the current Zeitgeist? We'd be fucked mate.

I agree with the effect that large negative news would cause on market sentiment. But at this point, it's a coin toss. We won't know until it happens.

>It's just crazy to me that governments around the world are reacting in such a manner to a virus that has a relatively low mortality rate for the general population.
It's the last straw effect, we had Ebola a few years ago and H1N1 before it, neither hit that sweet spot of hospitalization rate + infection rate that CoVid has.

If Covid had a higher death rate, it would also mean less infections down the road, as dead and buried people can't spread the disease.
The panic is over the fear of being infected and falling into the 2-4% of severe/critical cases, either through (unknown) pre-existing conditions, being old or just having shitty luck.
