The fed is not really "private," its just advertised as private so its perceived as non-political, even though it obviously is now. The fed is chartered by congress and congress can at any time end it / change it, or do w/e they want with it, and all the members of the fed board are nominated by the president and confirmed by the senate. The fed is literally just another division of the government.
