So your telling me if the government gives a bailout to the airlines, they will take a stake in the airline that will lead to the airline declaring bankruptcy wiping out shareholders and allowing the airline to start fresh again with a new stock and no government ownership. this isnt really all too different from what norway did with all their money from the oil boom in the 70s and 80s. the circumstances might be different, but the principle of the government gaining major stakes in corporations arent anything new.

If the government does things the right way, the shareholders will not get wiped out. What will happen, though, is that they will get diluted, assuming the company was viable in the first place. The people you have to blame are the executives who stupidly bought back stock and are now in trouble.

Don't like the terms the government is offering? Here is what the company can do: 1) Issue new equity (the reverse of a stock buyback) to raise cash. As you know, equity does not have to be paid back but it dilutes existing shares 2) Issue bonds

If the company was on shaky grounds even before the virus shut down the economy, the US government could generously offer 0% loans in return for convertible bonds that convert at a 40% discount to current stock price. If the company was healthy before the economic shut down, the government could outright give the company money in return for equity at a 40% discount to current price.

Either way, the shareholders should be punished for accepting such incompetent management. The American taxpayer should not be on the hook to bail out corporate management everytime they go all-in on margin and then get a margin call.
