I think the mass panic is causing people to rush to the hospital, if the 2016 seasonal flu killed 25k in a winter season and let’s say this season had lasted 5 months since northern Italy may have had a cold year. That’s about 5K does the per month. So if these people were using hospital beds of their critical conditions that alone would take a big chunk of hospital beds throughout the season. Now if there was mass hysteria on a flu like H1N1 had or something like that I’d imagine the beds would start to get filled much quicker so to people feeling any symptoms and fearing death or severe illness and heading for the hospitals thus causing a shortage.
