I decided to change job just over a month ago. I was working for big hardware/software corporation, but was not satisfied with my salary. Just 5 days after I left their stocks started to decline from the peak. Now, one month later after my departure, their stocks are down more than 65%. I literally just escaped sinking boat without knowing it.

I laugh at my project manager, who was trying to make me feel how great our corporation will become and what career I've lost.

I mean I work in a jail system not a prison so actual riots/uprisings are virtually unheard of, even where I work which is in a huge metro area. Anyway, yea it used to be a lot more hardcore but where I’m at it’s honestly pretty comfy. Smells like shit and you deal with niggers all day, but my crew is good dudes so it makes it ok. That being said I never planned to work there my whole life and crypto will likely let me retire early so I’m grateful to just be taking it easy for now. I wouldn’t want to be on the street currently with the public sentiment towards police or if SHTF due to the virus or just a general economic collapse after all this government fuckery

>Finance in local government
Not really fucked at all because I am the department head and basically deputy CFO, but we are looking at layoffs if a recession hits.

Our city was already in deep shit. It was hit very hard by the 08 crisis. We had to reduce staff by 23%. We just this past year got within close distance of our 2008 tax levy (when adjusting for inflation, nominally we are ahead).

However, our pension was already one of the worst funded in the state and it's getting destroyed. It's going to be very tough years if we don't bounce back and I'm the one in charge of layoffs.

If it gets that bad I might offer a salary cut. I've been making six figures since 29 and laying off people with 30 years of service just as their pension disapears is brutal.

externals won't be hired for a while. best advice i can give you is to study topics which are technology agnostic (bettdr learn about distributed systems in general than corba, rmi or whatever the state of the art solution is).
make cold calls. tell people you know it's probably bad but times will be better and you'd like to work together with them when everything is going to go a normal way. i'm drunk. hehe.

Then again, our police union has gotten such a boost from the state in negotiations that the median officer now makes over $100,000 and are basically impossible to fire even if they fuck up over and over. And our teachers are refusing to do remote lesson plans because "it's not in the contract, pay me more," so fuck it.

I just wish we could choose who to layoff, then it might actually be a net benefit to taxpayers, but the unions bargained for seniority, so all the Boomers keep maximum benefits and all layoffs and pay/benefit cuts will hit young workers.
