Now, the question is can it be pulled off?

The borders are finally closed to hotspot countries, the US is rural enough that the initial uncontrolled spread might not be too bad, people are already self-isolating (that's why toilet paper, hand sanitizer is sold out), many schools have been shut down and places of employment switched to wfh.

If they actually get onto mass testing and contact tracing then I could see them stopping this.

The entire country may not have enough life-saving equipment for everyone, but it might have enough to send equipment to the few cities that need it.

If it's too late too do it without lockdowns, though, then we're turning red again in the next couple weeks. But I think the US being spread out may have lowered the r0 enough to make this manageable.

It's been my suspicion for a while that he had someone tell him how much time he had left to take action before the window of opportunity closes, and that may be why he's doing this now.

This big conference is bluster to help the market but suddenly going hard into testing may still work.
