why would it recover and moon? don't people love to claim that crypto/BTC is like a "digital gold", a great "store of value", and yet here we are in the midst of a crash and crypto is getting hit harder than anything.

It's useless. It isn't a good store of value (what value?), it isn't a good transactional currency in day-to-day life (slow, confusing for normies), and after all these years has failed to gain any mainstream adoption. Plus this isn't even touching on the fact that 99.9% of all shitcoins have failed to meet their whitepaper/roadmap proposals and essentially delivered absolutely nothing of substance.

Western countries cannot reasonably do this while also maintaining the guise of democracy and freedom.

That's exactly what Bitcoin is. A service. A payment service that cuts out middlemen. You pay a single fee to miners and your money is sent from one wallet to another. That's all it is. Now it is programmable so you can have applications running on your phone and there are Bitcoin ATM's. Using it to buy groceries and as a daily payment of goods or services is not a viable option until volatility of the price disappears and it stabilizes. That is nowhere near a possibility today. It will be years before that happens.

It was an experiment to see if decentralized money could work and it succeeded in doing that. However, it did not succeed in becoming electronic digital cash. It has become highly manipulated and highly centralized to those that bought in early and never sold. Bitcoin is a failed experiment in totality. Where Bitcoin has failed, another will take the positives and advance on those. Crypto is here to stay.
