so the difference between buying a stock and buying calls is that i can put less money up front with calls, and therefore make more profit? so if i expect a stock to go up 10% in a week, i am better off buying calls with a higher strike price than just buying the stock itself?

You guys have seen the futures right???

>>17721960
That's not shorting. Shorting is like this:
You have 100 gold coins. I see that the price of gold is going to drop soon, but you don't really care. You just want to know that you have 100 gold coins because you think in 30 years you can retire with them. So I step in and make you a deal, "I'll borrow your gold coins and soon I'll give them all back - no catch". You are basically indifferent to whether or not you have them for a short time, as long as you get them back. So I take your coins and sell them. Then the price for gold drops, and I buy them back. Now I've give you back you're gold and I keep the extra cash.

It's exactly the same for stocks. The stocks you're shorting are just equity to people, and they don't want to liquidate it anyway. When you short a market before it crashes its just good timing, not a crime. Would you blame people for buying stocks before the market rose? The only difference between a riding and falling market is short term fluxuations on retirement funds. So stop whining, and go make some fucking money

This is gonna be 9/11 in at least a dozen American cities.

If Trump doesn't lock down the country soon it's gonna be 9/11 in dozens and multiple times worse than 9/11 in a dozen cities due to exponential growth

We have capacity to save maybe 500k-1m people from this disease. The treatment requires equipment that exists in limited quantity and is not stockpiled with extra surge capacity or slack (i.e., most of it is already in use).

There's very little spare ventilator and oxygenation equipment available but 20% of the infected will need it for 3-6 weeks. This spreads worse than the flu.

As long as total infected in the US stay below 500k nationwide, we can MAYBE avoid having tens of thousands of people dying in hospital hallways, not just without treatment but without even being assessed for treatment.

If you're over 65 in Italy right now and you go to the hospital because you can't breathe, they ignore you and let you die without any attention.

If you're a young person but you have diabetes or something? Same thing. It came right from an Italian doctor on Twitter. They said forget treatment, these kinds of patients aren't even assessed. They're prioritizing those with greatest chances of survival and lifetime remaining. The rest die.

Doubling time of infected has been about 4 days outside China for a while, though I'm not sure what it was yesterday/today.

There are some estimates that put us at somewhere like 40k-700k total infected nationwide so we could actually already be at the threshold where we'll see hospitals fill up as, iirc, the virus takes a couple weeks to kill once you see symptoms.

Once the life-saving equipment is full, any new cases have a 20% death rate just because being in that 20% is guaranteed death when there's no equipment to keep you breathing.

If we're at something like 250k total infected in the us right now then Trump has maybe 4 days to lockdown all major cities and stop the spread.

Yes that's true, however the orange man still has a card to play in the form of a stimulus. Surely that would prevent SPY from reverting back to mid 2016...Ultimately it's just a pandemic that should significantly decrease in the next 2-3 months. Oil price alone isn't enough to rape the markets like this

>> No.17722415

option has the implied volatility meaning the more people that buy an option the higher the price goes when leveraged against the stock price. The option leverage is calculated by multiply the strike price with delta divide by option price and then subtract by 1. You can look up the delta value in any trading app you are using. Option calls works to your advantage if

1. you didn't buy the top (or the bottom if your a bear)
2. the expiration date is far away in the future that you don't get hit by time decay during holding

This is one way of taking profit from options, you can do vertical put spreads for long position but this is more complicated.

i don't see how we could realistically have a bottom priced in before next week at the very earliest with cases continuing to expand exponentially in the us. this is actually not hard to predict - we have about 2-3 weeks of panic and then presumably things will start to pick up, provided oil is allowed to recover.

if oil is not allowed to come back up we have a serious fucking problem, a systemic problem that will cause a financial crisis. we're flirting with financial crisis as it is.

1 call is a contract over an underlying asset. you gain the option to buy 100 stock at a specific price and that contract expires at a particular time.

example:

AAPL is trading at $300

Scenario 1.) You buy 100 AAPL at $300/share for $30,000

Scenario 2.) You buy 1 call AAPL at a strike price $300, expires April, at $7/share, for $700

Result:
A.) AAPL is at $350 by April
1.) sell 100 AAPL @ $350, $5000 profit
2.) sell 1 call AAPL, [($350-$300)*100]-$700 = $4300 profit

B.) AAPL is at $300 by April
1.) sell 100 AAPL @ $300 for $0 profit
2.) call expires worthless, $0-$700 = -$700 profit

c.) AAPL is at $250 by April
1.) sell 100 AAPL @ $250, -$5000 profit
2.) call expires worthless, $0-$700 = -$700 profit

There's advantages and disadvantages to each. If you buy the stock, you pay full price, you participate in upward/downward movement and you own the equity. If you buy the call you pay a relatively small price, participate in upward movement minus your cost, you participate in limited downward movement but lose your principal, and you own no equity.

Don't trade if you don't know what you're doing. Buying an option now is super expensive because volatility/premiums are sky high and when we bounce (there are always bounces) you risk volatility crush.

Anyways, if you want to learn basics check out option alpha. The videos are structured for beginners. Whatever strike price you pick is up to you. Delta is typically the percentage chance of finished in the money at expiration, but this market isn't typical. It still shows how the value of the position changes for each tick in the underlying asset, and gamma after that. Options that expire sooner will be cheaper, but if you're not careful Theta will kill you (time decay). You'll probably want to close your position before expiration because then you get whatever value the ticker moved plus remaining time value. But that's up to you. Learn about risk management so you don't blow up your account. Well anyways check out those videos I mentioned, lots to cover

Definitely.

None of us in any of our lifetimes, or our grandparents, have seen the death this could cause.

It's not guaranteed. Bigger cities could enact stricter social distancing, some people might become more aware and change their behavior enough to buy time until Trump locks down (oh God I hope he does), but right now there is the potential for 10% of the US' population to simply die in the next few months.

Merkel is saying Germany will have 70% infected, as if she doesn't care or realize that means 14% of Germany would die.

Imagine being so afraid of causing vague "panic" or nudging your precious economy that you would sacrifice 14% of your population... And still cause panic and an economic crash because losing 14% (about 1 in 7 Germans) of your population in just a few months is going to absolutely devastate any country.

And imagine with free movement between Germany and other EU countries, Germany is basically dooming the entire EU to Italy's fate or worse if they actually let themselves become a viral breeding ground with 70% infected.

Are you sure? I imagine the Fed could print mountains of money and not devalue the dollar by 10%... Meanwhile anyone who didn't sell during the repo bullshit is down 20%

it really is. virus or not the markets been misfiring for a while. a month ago it was up 1%, next day up 1%, next day up 2%. like that shits not normal and not sustainable. the engine has been misfiring for a while.

and now in true trump retardation a week ago he called the whole thing a hoax and everything was fine. puts pence in charge of it, a guy that doesnt believe in evolution and calls his wife mother. americans are fat, dont have health coverage, go to work sick, dont understand the concept of taking a couple weeks off work. its going to spread like fucking wildfire.

and the recession is going to be a mindset. people still have money but the party is kinda over. a month ago everyone, that was invested and had their shit together, had fuck you money so to speak. now? its like, well hold on, lets think about this, im not printing money anymore, no i dont think should buy this, that car costs how much? And god forbid i go and do anything, even if flights and vacations are half off fuck that noise.

this is the one. its not going to off half the population or anything like that, but this is the beginning of a fucked economy for a while.

I don't get it?
This retard is gonna wait 3-5 years to make up for the profits he's losing now
Everyone knows it's going down and he still buys

Isn't SQQQ just perfect? As I mean it acts weirdly in case of down and grow for a lot, like 10% up/down tons of times.
But if you are in long term trend without much of corrections you are gonna get a gains additional profits compared to just shorting x3, aren't you?As ETF x3 long on bull market grew amazingly in 5 years.

right. the funny thing is people only see what they lost the last couple weeks. DOW was at like 16-17k when trump got elected. everyone is still up relative to that. i mean, even if DOW is at 15k next week it's kinda like nothing happened. being up 20 30 40% per year was fun, but for fucks sake that's hollow gain.
