Welcome to thermodynamics kid. Even the most efficient heat engine (blast furnace - water heater - Carnot heat engine) is only 40% efficient in perfect conditions and thats just heating water.

A car has infinite more complexity than that, with indepedent electrical system, AC, HVAC, drivetrain. I'm amazed its even 10% efficient.

As an engineer I am routinely amazed at just how fucking cheap cars are. A boiler in an apartment complex is like $50k+ and is just a big water tank with a heating element underneath.

Yes, I also had thermodynamics in college, so I'm aware of how much energy is lost, and how is it lost. I mention the low efficiency, not to make a point about combustion-based cars being shit (because yes, major props to auto engineers for getting the effficiency and for making such complex machinery cheap and easy to mass-produce), but because combustion-based engines used today are by nature of the process extremely inefficient.

This is why I really hope the auto industry focus more on electric cars going forwards, and the research needeed to circunvert the battery problem, because you can hit something like 60% efficiency on electric motors and that's a huge leap from our actual engines
