I've been having trouble sleeping and was watching the european open on bloomberg Monday midnight. Ended up staying awake until 6am watching Corona blow up in Italy and South Korea.

Sorry, I was trying to be brief after my last lengthy post.

I sold my index funds at 1pm GMT on Monday, I was sitting on around 20% profit, which came to a little over £2500. Vanguard say "We'll sell at the next valuation point", which I assume would be close of market on the 24th? However, they appear to have done nothing until the 26th or the 27th, which is my new valuation, and I've now dropped to just under £1600 gained and 12.95% rate of return.

The estimated value on my order was £17,312.37 and I've now got cash of £16,342.47? I've lost 1k because they put the order through later.

I'm aware that they'll have dropped from when I sold because the market dropped on the 24th, but they appear to be valuating from the 26th or even the 27th.

So far the drop has been 12% or so on SPX and if we are supremely lucky, it might drop as far as it did in the Great Recession which was something like 55% from the peak. Newish to stocks and quick question: how can you pull off shorting? If you're convinced something is going down so you're going to sell it, how can you be sure (or at least have the odds on your side) someone else will actually buy your shares and get you off the hook before it loses you money?

For example, I'm tempted to buy a bunch of SQQQ. Assuming it actually does go up, when I think it's run its course and the market is going to stabilize I'd try to sell, but wouldn't other people also see the same signs and therefore not want to buy my shares leaving me with stocks which will ultimately drop me right back to where I started or even worse?
