any tradies here?
im a 20 year old zoomer strongly considering quitting my corporate ragie wagie cagie and applying for a plumbing apprenticeship. done my research and it seems like there’s a mega shortage of skilled laborers in my state. is there anything i should know about the tradie life before i get into it?
all the trade school websites just provide links to the application pages to a bunch of different unions for that trade. the application process between the different unions seems basically identical and not very difficult (they give you a test on math, locating information and reading comprehension before an interview which looks to be graded on attitude basically).
learning an actual skill and working with my hands all day sounds absolutely fucking based

I'm not a nigger, either. Private universities love me-only heard back from 2 out of the 20+ I applied to, and guess what? Two full rides for having a 4.0 and a 1500+SAT.

The only scenario in which college may be difficult financially is if you are retarded and have rich parents who refuse to contribute. Many t50 schools offer full ride scholarships if your parents make less than $80K a yr. What's your excuse?

People treat the debate like it's "trade vs. college"

But what if you graduated from college and want to get into trades? Are these people common? Do you have an easier time getting into trades if you have a degree?

I did it the other way around. Became a carpenter after hs because I didn't know what else to do. Did it for a decade, made good money but unfortunately blew most of it on drugs and travel.
Got bored and sore so started uni a few years ago. Worked hard, no partying, got great grades, been riding scholarships the last few years.

how old are you? is college interesting at your age?

I've always strongly believed after high school young men should go into a part-time job or light trade until their mid-20's where they can take college more seriously.
It took me 8 years total (6 1/2 actively enrolled) to finish my engineering degree, granted its tough as is and others in my situation wouldve given up but I dont doubt if I started it in my mid 20's I wouldnt have lost my scholarships and smoked so much weed.

do you understand that there isnt some extreme dichotomy that mandates you either work in a cubicle or doing manual labor? There are a fuck load of jobs that take college degrees that dont use traditional offices. STEM is obviously the most worth but even then there are countless other jobs that never see a cubicle that use degrees.

I'm 31 now. Dropped out of hs young. Live in a country where that doesn't matter for entrance requirements if you can prove you're smart and motivated.
I find it really interesting. I love it in fact. Undergrad was fun, being spoonfed knowledge and problem solving skills that I'd have to retain and utilize was like playing a challenging game. Now I spend all day listening to music in a comfy chair writing code to model and predict physical reality.
Definitely glad I didn't go at 18 though, I would have picked a worthless degree and spent the time chasing pussy.

heres my take, i went to a vocational high school for hvac and attended uni for economics (currently tech sales wagecucking).. if you get into the trades seek unions. you can make 50-150k depending on hours and experience.. however your coworkers will actually be braindead for the most part, many will drink before work, during lunch, and after work. if this doesnt bother you, its an okay way to make a living albeit physically demanding.

if you choose to go corporate realize theres a good chance youre going to be automated out of existence in ~10 years.. and you will fucking hate your life, there is nothing as soul crushing as a cubicle. ive made six figs in my sales gig before but my mental health is borderline heinous. i still think about going back to trades all the time.

good luck, either way youre FUCKED. welcome to late stage capitalism. your best bet is to stack your cash, avoid dumb purchases and debt, and invest aggressively until your funds work for you and your time is no longer required as a means of exchange.

Took the steam fitter test(plunking). Real easy and basic. The hardest part about union apprenticeship is waiting. If you have no experience, expect to wait at least a year or two before getting in. I went into the bricklayers because they hired almost immediately with similar pay.

There were 30+ guys with experience in there with me. I have some friends that waited 4 years to get into the ibew. It all depends on the union. The “regulates” unions like steamfitters and electricians are tough. A lot of class work and knowledge. It’s not like the bricklayers or roofers where a brain dead loser can do it. I was amazed myself when I figured out just how long it could be.

Do it, you can always do something else after you get your ticket and no one can take your ticket away. Good fall back for trying new things, especially if your in the union, it’s easy to come and go in the union as long as your dues are paid.

It’s not just limited skills either. You learn problem solving skills that you can apply to everything. I can fix stuff at my apartment, my car, my electronics, plumbing, etc. I have a steel trade, it’s great I work as much as I want in a year. I get phone calls from the union with job offers.

I’ve been working and saving for the last few years so this year or next I’m going to do something else. Try my own business or whatever. Easy to do that with a trade
