Its the implied volatility

In easy terms:
Imagine buying OTM options on a stock that has been flat for a month. The options would be cheaper, since the stock does not move much and its not expected to reach the strike price.

Now imagine a company like SPCE. Either the price will go to 15 or 50. Its been up and down 10% in an hour and huge movements are expected. So the price for buying the option will increase.

Sometimes people wake up to their stock gaining 5%, but their Calls staying at the same price because volatility increased so much. After some time the stock will gain back stability usually and the volatility decreases again.

Space industry was so undervalued and no one paid any attention.. They valued this stock at just 1.5b market cap.. but any other tech stock starts at 10b market cap..
this is just a beginning.. NFLX is more appropriate comparison then Tesla.. bcz it has no competitor and demand for space tourism is high.. Watch this stock going to $100 after a July launch if successful

I have a $650k portfolio right now. Following the boring 70% total market index (SPY) and (30% bond index) for my boomer gains.

I am planning to start the divvy path on my income stream. I currently invest around $2k a month outside of my 401k matching investments.

What is a good divy investment match? I see you go individual stocks, but any index / ETF funds you recommend?

Figure okay i'll put a limit buy below that gap as it'll probably fill during the day. Limit gets hit but selling doesn't stop. Average down at -4% it keeps going to -8% before finally getting some support in the last two hours for a -6%. Jesus. You're missing that you don't get rich quick just because you want to, no matter how badly you want it. The stock market doesn't have difficulty modes. If you blow your 500 on some penny stock you think is going to moon, 90% of the time you're going to lose it.

What's your threshold for not being a poorfag, and actually having enough capital to invest for meaningful returns? 10K? 20K? You think you're going to increase your 500 bucks by 20 or 40 times? Not a fucking chance.

Major investors might pour in, creating more space ports and planes too. 200 to 300 USD per share in two years is not very far fetched if hypersonic travel catches on and the money flows in. >make sure the company has a real shot

honestly with penny stocks you'd probably have a much higher probability of success if you just looked for which ones were hyped the most over some event or announcement and ride the upward momentum, selling for a nice profit before the event even happens. idk why no one seems to do this here, playing the hype is obvious while knowing whether a company will actually achieve or fail at their "thing" is purely gambling and unpredictable. whereas taking advantage of the ANTICIPATION of good news is very predictable if you know what to look for.

you're also better off doing this but with real stocks that aren't penny stocks, but again no one here wants to listen to real advice they just want memes, which is why they lose money like retards. but i try, at least.

There are plenty of stocks like that which have doubled or tripled in a single year, the trouble is finding them, but that's a problem regardless of what you're in. How many people here have ever made 10x on a meme penny stock without options, let alone 100x?

you guys seem to be of the school of thought that you should treat the stock market like a bank account. just park your cash in there so it grows more than in a bank account. which doesnt really make sense because of the risks and lack of insurance.

i guess im thinking about the stock market as a way to grow wealth. and wondering what amount is needed to get the ball rolling, or what strategy should people who have low capital use?

They are talking to the class that has substantial life savings and looking to invest. These people are usually older and can't afford major losses because they won't have time to make it back working or are already retired.

For those people it is sound advice. There is no guarantee of getting rich ever, much less, quickly. The real question is could you be satisfied if you turned your 500 in to 2,000 dollars over a 1 year period? That could easily happen with some basic research. And 2 grans is nothing to look down your nose at. 500 is nothing to look down your nose at either.

If you are disciplined and because SPCE is on our minds tonight, try buying about 10 shares of it when the market next opens. See if our speculation is correct that hypersonic travel and space tourism becomes a profitable game at some point in the not too distant future.

Or if you want an insane risk, look for a stock under 2 dollars per share that has a lot of talk and hype about some upcoming event in its future (much like we are getting stoked over Virgin Galactic's first commercial flight and the recent high of 28.68 at close today.) You want a stock with a good story and a reason for hope in the minds of investors. You CAN lose everything or close to it so put your 500 dollars into something tangible if you can't stand the risk.

I do own 1,000 shares of SPCE and I do think it is going way up in the next year, so I'm a little biased.

If making money in the stock market was "easy" everyone would be a rich fuck. Sadly it ain't. The only I guess easy way is to just dump money each month into a Fund and let it roll for 20+ years. The problem is two fold, one you gotta have the time and effort to let it work. Two, you must have extra money, enough to make it worth a damn if this is your only retirement account, in the first place. If this is your only retirement option, $50 a month won't do you jack shit if your say only 10 years away from retirement. Yeah you'll make money but it'll be a far cry from what you need to live off of. So to even things out, to tilt things in your favor you need a massive upfront seed wad to kick start the process. If your young it don't mater, 50 a month will take you far cause you have a much longer ways to go till your at retirement.

The amount of money you start with doesn't matter long term, everyone should be investing in ETFs with their extra money, but that's very different than picking individual stocks and hoping you win the proverbial lottery. You either have the ability to beat the market, or you're wasting your time trying to learn about stocks. 99% of people are in the latter category and are wasting their time doing anything besides investing in ETFs, including most people here. Only 16% of professional money managers manage to do it annually and only 1% will do it three years in a row. There's a survivorship bias here, you're not seeing all the people that made stupid bets, lost, and stopped trading.
>which doesnt really make sense because of the risks and lack of insurance.
Where else are you going to put your money? Most other investment vehicles don't beat inflation, let alone return a significant sum. There's no safe bet with stocks or most ETFs because the market could crash and never return to these levels, but everyone in the last hundred years was better off investing than they were sitting on their money.

Buffet has barely managed to beat the S&P 500 and even he says that most people should just use an S&P 500 ETF instead of trying to pick individual stocks. What you are not including is the fact that there's always someone who beats the market, just like if you had a game where everyone had to flip a coin and the winner would move on, there would be one person who could win millions of times in a row. Buffet also changes companies when he buys them and replaces some of their leadership, you can't do that.

You can take on more risk and get a higher return than the S&P 500, you won't however find that 100x stock and turn your $1,500 into millions. The people that manage to do that are very intelligent, rational, and they have extremely good risk management skills so they know just when to exit. That likely isn't you.

No one who makes serious money will give you their strategy because then they would lose their edge if it becomes popular. Instead what you'll get here are people telling you to buy various stocks, some will be flat out scams, some will be more well intentioned pump and dump schemes, and a few of them will be good long term picks. You will have to decide which is what and when to take profit, that's is key. Take SPCE for example which someone recommended you, don't be an idiot and never sell it if you do buy that stock, most people who are talking about it here are just pumping it so they can take profit and move onto the next meme stock of the week. It may still go up long term, but that isn't their angle. If you ever manage double your investment in something like that, something high risk, withdraw half and let the rest ride if you think it's still good long term pick. Don't let greed rob you of your profits if you make them, that's how a lot of people here end up losing big.

well its a small amount and the 8% growth is only becuase how well the stock market is doing as a whole right now. the etfs and funds are super low risk hence the low average 8% gains the last couple years

Robinhood just gives you the dividends where other brokers have the option to reinvest those dividends to buy more shares automatically, even fractions of the shares. But with 100k and inexperienced you'd be better off talking to a financial advisor

Economics n00b here looking for a correction in my thinking

I'm trying to understand the implications of China's economy and labour force taking a dive with respect to minerals.

On the one hand, China produces most still alot of each mineral (gold, bauxite, zinc, iron ore...) so global production of these will go down and I expect their values to go up and foreign mining companies to go up in value.

On the other hand, China is also the top user of most minerals, so less use means I would expect their value to go down globally.

So which is it?

Any Canucks out there use Wealthsimple Trade?
It looks like a canadian alternative to Robinhood but was wondering what /smg/ thought of it.

>> No.17252050

Guys, SPCE might go up to 50 or 60 but it's based on pure fucking hype. You're talking about a 90 minute ride to the edge of space for 250k, even Mr. Branson said he was expecting 1,500 customers in 2023. And you guys are fucking delusional if you think this is gonna be a good choice for hypersonic travel. It's going to be expensive as hell and only really have applications for the extremely wealthy. At least concorde was a normal plane, this has 10x the complexity and a pretty abysmal safety track record so far. Not to mention that runways would probably have to be extended. Would you risk dying(or paying in excess of 50k) for a 4 hour faster flight to paris. Not to mention Elon and Blue origin are working on P2P and space tourism with much deeper pockets and more experience. Do not long SPCE, swing trade it though, FOMO could be off the charts. ST is freaking out. Also AGRX approved today. Doubled my account in 3 months.

You would likely be better off putting your money into ETFs unless you are going to actively manage your stocks and cut the losers. I don't think individuals stocks are for you, fren.
>>17252033
The problem with Wealthsimple is that they don't allow you to hold US currency, meaning you're paying an exchange fee every time you buy and sell US equities. I also don't know if they allow option trading.

I utilize the "All Century Portfolio" strategy for my ROTH IRA

I have another brokerage account that I use to pick a few stocks that I plan on holding forever like msft, apple, att, etc. My bank also offers mutual funds and I auto contribute to it each month and any addition funds left over at the end of the month go into it.

With leverage or without leverage? Without leverage maybe SPY, VOO, those two are trying to match the S&P 500 index which is the standard of investment returns, so you should be doing pretty well over time, but on top of that, you may want to invest some in bond and global market ETFs as well. I think Vanguard Total International Stock ETF (VXUS) and
Vanguard Total Bond Market ETF (BND) are popular for that but I haven't looked into them.

You can build a three ETF portfolio with an even split between them, keep investing your money into them, and let them grow over time. You won't have to do much else besides look into rebalancing every now and then and see if you can get a better ETFs.

You don't need to read any investment related books unless you want to try to beat the market, otherwise just follow the Boglehead advice or most of the ETF advice given in general.

"2018 was the fourth-worst year for U.S. equity managers since 2001; 68.83% of domestic equity funds lagged the S&P Composite 1500® during the one-year period ending Dec. 31, 2018"

According to the S&P 500 Persistence Scorecard: December 2019, just 8% of domestic equity funds remained in the top quartile over a three-year period.

The people that beat the market managing money professionally aren't consistently doing it. Over a 15 year period, almost no one will. I think they did a study where they found just a few companies that have done it. Where are the successful money managers? They're not winning in any area, it should be trivial for them to beat the market with a slightly higher weight on some of the top stocks favored by retail investors like Amazon and Google.
