I'm rough on the details, but I imagine the BTC gets held in some smart contract fuckery, and rather than the coins moving out of the wallet, they just hang out there until withdrawn back to the bitcoin wallet. So, you're paying to send fantom with information saying how much bitcoin you have...just a guess and some other reading I've seen on the tech Ftm is doing.
