I know this thread is a joke, but unironically the answer is yes.

As the third world (particularly Africa) continues to breed out of control, and as those low-IQ resource drains continue to spread over the world, potable water will become a hot commodity. The privitization of water sources is already taking place in parts of Africa to save the savage monkeys from themselves and profit in the process. As time goes by this will become mode and more common.

Yes, invest in companies that specialize in large-scale water purification, and PMCs that will be used to protect them.

I guess the problem is the cost of solar panels and the devices themselves. It makes me sad to think there are still places in the world where people struggle to get basic necessities like food and water..

I spent a few minutes looking.

You can maybe get a unit that makes 2000 liters per hour (from 6000 liters.) drawing 7kW per thousand liters. At avg kWh costs, that's about a dollar to fill 5 bathtubs.

Water use estimates say avg household use is 60gal/person. You'd make 6000gallons a day, or enough for 100 people. A different source says 6000gallons/mo/house, (which might contain avg of 3.3 people.)
They say the cost in most cities works out to about 3-4 dollars per thousand gallons. For a few cities it's about 6.6 and in SD and LA it's 7-9.

All that is to say that assuming the input water and transportation of finished product is free, a $10k unit can satisfy 100 people (30 houses) for $24 in electricity it makes $24 of water (using avg prices.)

There's too many variables involved to be accurate. It would only feasibly work on the coast.

I think there are physical limitations preventing this from ever being feasible outside of a few specific applications.
