$20,000 in the bank.

Do I buy a house or get an apartment and put the money in index funds?

Put it all into a shitcoin of your choice. Go balls to the wall, don't be a pussy. "safe investments" are for wagecucks with no balls or rich boomers. Real estate is for inheritors or rich boomers. I would save up more first though.

this is correct.
the only chance poor people have to have an enjoyable life is to take big risks as often as possible. otherwise you will work until old age at a minimum, more likely until death.

20k isn't much to be honest. If that is all the money you have, honestly I would sit on it. Put the 20k in a high interest online savings account and continue to save. Once you have 6 months of expenses saved in cash, you can consider other options.

Do you have high interest debt? Pay that off first if you do.

Whether you use extra cash for a mortgage down payment or choose to invest it will depend on whether you want to go down the road of home ownership. Beware, it can be a fucking money pit and should be seen as a lifestyle choice and not an investment.

Ignore the crypto tards here, this forum is overrun with them and they are clueless. If you really want to invest safely, go with a mix of traditional mixed stock and bond funds and feel free to take some crypto positions with a smaller percentage of your capital.

I have a Discover account that gets 1.7% Obviously this is virtually nothing, but better than a brick and mortar bank. I tend to keep 40-50k in it. I use it as a safety fund and as a liquid source for toys I want to buy - gaming, mountain bike stuff, etc.

How old are you? What is your life situation? The point is to make sure you have about 6 months worth of funds in a stable and liquid form, then you can choose to use the surplus for other things.

Closing costs are 2 - 4% for a property. You want at least 20% down payment for a home purchase. After closing, you also need to have six months of mortgage payments before the bank will even consider the loan
