An AR should be your first purchase. Mags are more available and have less worries tied to them. A 5.56 AR can shoot .223 but a .223 AR shouldn't shoot 5.56. Ammo is about the same in price in my experience however 7.62x39 is usually steel cased and if left out can rust. It usually has a laquer or polymer coating to help with feeding and the laquer is more rust resistant. AR will always be brass cased but you can get steel cased for less

AK mags that aren't steel surplus ones are typically shit. The way the mag locks has a habit to wear polymer but not steel. Steel reinforced polymer mags do exist but they typically cost more than surplus steel mags.

You can buy or build a solid AR for $500-600 or less. Don't get a polymer lower. PSA is fine but try for their premium line of barrels. Aero is typically recommended over PSA. But I like my PSA 20 incher.

A WASR 10 is a Romanian imported AK. It's a work horse. They go for about $700 new but armslist in your area may have them cheaper. American AKs are trash. Don't buy a guys build AK. Be wary of Polish AKs. They are made in poland but not at a good factory

You'll read about certain issues on WASRs such as canted sights or mag wobble but any gun after 2012 shouldn't have these issues. 08-09 guns have QC issues due to election panic buying. I got a 2019 marked wasr and everything is gucci
