16631073 No.16631073 [Reply] [Original]

I was recently traveling abroad and bought an item in a local market for $10. The market was flooded with the same exact item, copious amounts of them. When I returned to the states I found the exact same item on Amazon for $100. Keep in mind, I bought at retail value, not wholesale. I’m confident I could buy in wholesale from the market vendors for half that, say $5/item. Are there insane tariffs on imports that would make this impossible? It seems too good to be true I could be making 10-15x on this item just by importing and relisting on Amazon. What am I missing here?

Lots of people doing the same thing. There may be more people trying to sell that crap on amazon than buyers who doesn't check the price first on aliexpress. You could target boomers directly tho.

Already top 1000 wallet. Why do you think I am capable of traveling to these unique places already?

Negative, this is a unique hand crafted item. It is not some factory mass produced item, I was literally watching vendors in their stall hand-make them. Identical to the ones on Amazon and other retailers for $85-300

Im not sure if it's different where you are from but here in Aus look up anti-dumping laws, you're not allowed to import mass amounts of items and sell them at a very reduced market price, basically unless you know the right people, the laws are set up to keep you from ever making it.

Problem is, I can only find 5-6 listings all throughout the web, with the major listing being on Amazon for $100. Other sites have somewhat similar product ranging between $85-300. Maybe there is non existent demand, but the item is functional and unique

Except I would be mass importing them to “dump” them at a mass increased price, 10-15x more than I paid for them

The truth is you haven't got to dump them. Pricing them slightly below everyone else will result in you getting the lion's share of the sales if your presentation is correct and staying off the radar. You're not missing anything, most overseas vendors will mark the goods as a gift if you ask them. Get on with it and don't be a pussy.

even if the tariff were 100% (which they won't be) you'd still be way in the green. just google HTSUS and try to find your product, or google Custom CROSS system (this is assuming you're importing to the US).

could also be that there just isn't demand in the US, so there's only a couple sellers on Amazon and they keep the price high. as soon as you flood the market with a 40' container full of this shit, the price will tank to $10 or less and you'll be broke.

Set up an import export enterprise. It really depends on the country in regards to tariffs.

>> No.16631643

There may be minimal demand in the US but if there is I think it’s likely a lack of supply. The item is functional and unique, it has roots back to the country and cannot be easily purchased in the US. With a little marketing on Instagram and Facebook I think it would do quite well even at $60

Before you spend any money, I would suggest that you put this item you have up for sale on ebay or wherever for the price you have in mind then see IF it sells.
If it does then go for it OP.

You would need to understand what the item is and how in functions to see why that statement is valid
