I don't know whether XMR will go up or down in value in the short or medium term. It's unfriendly to regulation, which limits its ability to be listed on mainstream exchanges, and sets it up for inevitable conflict with law enforcement in the future if it ever gets huge. This is the double-edged sword of having strong, mandatory privacy tech on a coin. Any "privacy" coin that ever eclipses XMR when it comes to exchange listings or regulatory friendliness, would be a red flag in my book that that coin isn't really private.
