A combination of many factors. To list a few, concern over the trade war, sentiment that most stocks were way overvalued (we were at an all time high and have been on a bull market for almost a decade), the expectation that the federal government was going to increase interest rates, which would have slowed the economy, and many companies announcing they were lowering guidance for the next year as a reaction to the higher interest rates. A few major companies missed their ER around this time.
