Generally speaking, at what point should I stop renting and look into owning a house? How much income should I be making? I'm still in college but I feel like renting an apartment is a fucking scam. But I'm a single guy with no kids so I don't really need a lot of space either. What does /biz/ think? I could see myself buying a 2 bedroom house if it has a garage and a lot of space between my neighbors.

Too many variables at hand for general advice. Set up a spreadsheet.
Heads up though, there are legitimate advantages to renting.

How much should I have saved for a down payment?

Fuck if I care. Just throw me into a hole and be done with it. I'm dead who cares?

I'm not planning to get married anytime soon though

>>16365782
Like what? The only advantage I could see is if you're in a state you don't plan to live in long term. But there are people who literally spent their entire lives renting.

how many children are you planning to get?

Not sure but honesty, as many as I can afford/handle. But I wouldn't be buying this house to fill it with kids. I just want a house so I can have some privacy and a garage to own 2-3 cars.

If it;s just about owning more than one car, then store a second car at a storage facility. I rented a storage locker from a corporate place a few blocks from my place when I moved, and they rent car spaces for $100 a month.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and assume you can't afford a house, because you're in bachelor mode blowing money on cars. The asic math for you is gonna be this:

House

Second car.

Pick one.

It's not just about having multiple cars. I don't want to live in a shitty apartment my whole life, where the walls are thin and you can't store your car in a garage and you have basically no real privacy. With a house I could be as quiet or loud as I want, I can have multiple cars without having to worry about putting them in storage, I can change what i want to it, list goes on. But right now I'm in college so I'm just tryinig to plan ahead here.

If you're in college you have no fucking business buying a house. Jesus fuck, you could have stated that at the beginning so we'd have known there was no fucking point talking about this with you.

Graduate, then come talk to us. When you have real income.

I did state it you fucking idiot. I never said I was buying a house right now. What's wrong with asking a question to plan for the future? Does thinking about anything past next week scary for you?
