Do you think about morality when investing?
Should I support a 'bad company' for the profit?

>> No.16353037

I think I do subconsciously. Like I have never bought Facebook stock because I dislike the company and don’t think their social media site is going to last long term.

>> No.16353290

I don't delude myself into thinking that I could ever know about all of the skeletons in a given company's closet, and so generally I don't try and make that a factor. Now politics I pay attention to.

You can only invest in ethical companies if you want. Don't invest in unethical ones. An index fund is unethical because you basically give your money to all companies.

yes you can. only go long in neutral or ethical companies.
example of ethical: pharma/biotech stocks, alternative/renewable energy stocks, ECL, etc.
neutral: disney, etsy, weed stocks, etc.

you can make money with unethical ones by only shorting them: coca cola, tesco, walmart, some oil companies,...

>> No.16354043

>>16353017
ethical = good PR + popular
unethical = bad PR + unpopular

you can't judge these companies by their stated mission. there are plenty of unethical non-profits. for example those who bring college kids to Africa to teach English and treat them like crap.

this is a modern phenomenon that shows the absence of religion in our life. because we don't have a moral grounding we look for corporations who have PR that reflects popular moral platitudes. Companies always have one goal: to make money. usually that requires treating employees and customers well but not always. If you believe any corporation has multiple goals, you got taken for a ride.

What about long term though?

Sooner or later a decent man will be president and these sociopathic corporations are going to have their shit pushed in, while the good companies will be fired with rocket boosters and go to the Moon

So in essence to you a biotech company that makes vaccines/medicine is about the same as one that makes weapons, or biggest oil companies ?
You don't need religion to know what is morally right and what is wrong you have intelligence and are self aware. Empathy is essential but even wit out that you can logical state that suffering is bad and creates a lot of problems within a civilized society. This is a high level of debate here on this board as always! You disappoint me.

Rebellion and anti-systemic behaviour is being commodified as we speak. You can make money while respecting consumer morality. All you have to do is sell them the idea of rebellion through yoir products. Sell pro-abortion socks to californians as a means of rebellion against muh opressive christian society. Sell "i love guns" t-shirts to pro 2nd ammendment republicans to "own the libs". Smart capitalists always win.

Absolutely. No evil company will get my investments. I know not everyone is perfect...but...people like Google (youtube), Twitter or facebook are censoring people and allow pedophiles on their platforms aka elsagate...yet they shadow an conservatives...I rather put my money with safe stocks or investments
that share my values.

> You don't need religion

you didn't read closely, let me try again. Your extrapolation to basic human empathy is pretty fedora tier too. You assume humanism is a default beleif, when it couldn't more unnatural. I digress.

In the past it was a generally accepted fact that corporations exist to make money. They knew not to look to them for moral leadership. what you are feeling by wondering which ones are moral is a lack of direction. You want to associate and attach yourself to groups that represent your morals.

healthy people are already attached to moral groups like their Church and family. they just put money in the market so they can retire. they don't care if it's cigarettes or electric cars.

>> No.16357097

>>16353017
I don't care. However, a couple things will give me pause:
>the CEO is a woman
>the majority of the board of directors is comprised of women
>the company engages in social marxist advertising.
I will never invest in Proctor & Gamble, for instance, because they allowed the Gillette division to make those commercials. Same with Disney. Keep your propaganda out of advertising and out of entertainment media.

I consider morality when investing if I think a company’s moral behavior will translate into a tarnished reputation and bad long term prospects for serving their customers.

Once I learned Uber got hacked and paid the guy off not to tell anyone about it, I decided this is a company that will tarnish its repuatation into the ground. I’ve been getting a lot of laughs watching its stock price steadily crater.

It's the most important part of investing to me. Society is fucked unless we can use our capital to fix the issues we see around us.
