Or doing just one leg of the condor (aka a credit spread) if you’re trying to play it directionally instead of sideways. With each passing day you collect premium on theta instead of losing cause you’re the seller.

And if you’ve got big boy money you can sell naked options and collect the premium without having to cover by buying a further out strike to cover

Look at selling contracts, it works the opposite of buying them and time decay works in your favor. There are videos out there that do a better job than me.
Put credit spreads and call credit spreads are important options strategies that keep you from getting fucked too hard if things REALLY go out of your favor.

Yeah, so let’s use AAPL for an example.

Idk what it was trading at before it’s last ER but let’s just say it was $255. To collect on theta instead of getting raped by it you would this:

If you think it’s gonna go up post ER you would sell a put at like $253 strike and at the same time buy a put at the $252 strike. Going into the ER event there’s gonna be a high IV (Implied Volatility). By selling the $253 and buying the $252 you are collecting the difference in the premiums on those two strikes. So when AAPL actually announces their ER and it only goes up like a dollar or some shit the IV then goes wayyyyy down and the value of both the puts you sold and bought go basically to zero, eventually becoming worthless as they reach expiration. Leaving you with the difference in the premiums you collected when you opened the trade.

Now that hopefully all the shit no nothings have done what they set out to do now AMRN's stock can fly higher as this month and next passes by. I hope like hell the FDA delivers the goods sooner and that the Holy Buyout comes before January is over. I want my fat wad soon as I can cause I got more stuff to buy. I'm on a deadline. My T-babies are getting ready for a nice share buyback plan, which is good if you've already got a shit load. Bad though if your wanting to buy. I like DIS stock but not right now. >> No.16346904

The contract says that until X date the seller must be willing to sell you 100 shares of the stock for the price set in the contract. That's the whole deal.

They're not really too-too complicated to use to hedge or even trade, only some of the math behind them. Watch the khanacademy videos on them and use optionsprofitcalculator and you should pick it up pretty fast.
The gist of them is that there are puts and calls. Buying a put means you agree to sell 100 shares of that stock at the strike price, buying a call means you agree to buy 100 shares at the strike. If you own a put you want the price of the shares to drop below the strike since you're then selling the shares for more than they're worth, when you have a call you want the opposite so you're buying the shares for less than they're worth. You can also take the opposite end of these deals by selling calls or puts, essentially betting the price won't go below/above the strike and the option contract will expire worthless. You can use options to hedge a position you have in case something goes wrong, dangerously speculate on price movements, or provide slow easy profits by taking unambitious bets that are very likely to end in your favor.
The way the value of options contracts is calculated looks extremely complicated, but is in reality only very complicated. Look up the Black-Scholes equation and how options Greeks interact with it once you understand the above.

lots of 100 shares are not required for buying puts and calls, however I would strongly advise against selling call contracts without covering, aka actually owning the shares in lots of 100. Most of the time amateur options traders do not actually exercise their contracts (end up buying/selling based on them), they just flip the contracts themselves for a profit. Every contract has an expiry date that is very important for calculating their value, most everyone who isn't part of a financial institution wouldn't wait til the end, you just sell your contract once it becomes more valuable.

>> No.16347062

What, I'm just getting into trading. I thought the appeal of option trading compared to real stocks is that it's cheaper. Less commission.
You're buying the right to buy or sell at a later date for a certain price.
So when you're buying calls, you could still buy the stock when the strike price hits.
