>phone interview with bigcorp
>goes well, they ask me to come see them in person
>I'm told the interview will be with a manager and that there'll be a proofreading exercise
>I get past reception etc and the guy who greets me is the CMO
>he pulls me into a room and we chat for 15-20 mins
>then he leaves and the interview starts, a manager is there yes, but also two directors
>the "proofreading" excersize is actually a technical/project planning task
>chat super informally with would-be manager, seems nice
>go home
>the recruiter says they were really impressed etc etc etc but theres one other candidate, got written feedback from bigcorp and it's really positive etc etc etc
>recruiter keeps calling me every day saying hes sorry they haven't given a yes or no yet and he'll tell me ASAP when he knows

What am I supposed to make of this?

I think it went well and I'd like to work there, but is there a reason they'd need more than 3-4 days to come to a decision?

I want to work for bigcorp, the wait is killing me :(

it probably means they offered the position to the other candidate, but the contract isn't signed. they aren't giving you a hard no, because you are next in line if the other guy declines.

>Had an interview yesterday

I can't stop thinking about it

Could it also mean that they simply haven't gotten around to interviewing the other guy yet?

I had an interview like that recently. met with the team for the hard grilling. then had a 30 minute interview scheduled with HR on my way out. I though it was going to just be a formality, but she started in with the gatekeeping bullshit. I aced the team interview but failed to impress the fat black lady from HR. got a rejection email the next day.

Basically. There was also about ~1.5 hours worth of me presenting on stuff.

They're just waiting for the other guy to clear background/drug tests. You're runner up.

This same exact thing happened to me. interview went great, tell me I'm a great candidate yadda yadda. Call back for follow up "we havent decided yet sorry". 2 months later calling back once a week "ok we will offer you the position". Found out the guy they had in mind didn't make it and I was the most convenient next in line. The manager later tried to say they hired me because I was great and kept calling to follow up but by then I knew better.
>yeah you are great, we just haven't heard back from the decision makers
bullshit, they just wanna string you as long as they can. Shady motherfuckers.

Lol most executive positions where I work have an hour interview max - maybe two hours if there is a worked example

Is it maybe just because they have to go through beauracracy and such that it's taking time?

Exact same thing happened to me. Strung along for 3 weeks while being told I was a great candidate with great feedback. They kept scheduling people and kept telling me I was in the running. Such a big surprise I wasn't chosen. Haven't been called back by the recruiter either.
It really is a clown world.
