How do I get started with buying assets?
If I wanted Stocks/Bonds/Crypto is there a way to buy them directly or is it better to go through a broker?

Open an etrade account for stocks
Open Coinbase (initially) for crypto

If you want precious metal and you are in the usa, use apmex. JM bullion is also good too.

why etrade over other brokers? Comission pricing?

Use Robinhood for stocks anon, it's commission-free. Etrade will take an assload of your profits.

I see that etrade is supposed to have better customer support (or advice maybe?). I plan on doing my own research either way, but as a beginner is it worth the commission pricing for investment advice?
