Assuming you're going under 15mph, you can dip your foot onto the ground and drag your toe edge to slow down.
If you're over 15mph, or bombing a steep hill, the only real way to slow/stop is to slide or eat shit.

Oh it's very possible. I've been longboardong for 8 years and am getting fucking good at it. Id say put aside about 200$ and you have a good starting board. Go with sector 9, landyatchz, arbor, and big name brands that aren't fucking expensive like loaded. A solid wooden board is the best.
