Market watch posted an interesting article today about the level of weakest link companies on the S&P. A weakest link company is any company with a credit rating, as determined by the S&P Global Ratings, of B- or worse. This number is now the highest it has been since 2009. Now, this isn't IMMEDIATE DOOMSDAY situation but, like the yield inversion earlier this year, it ain't exactly peachy.

There's a couple in my watchlist with weirdly steady rising trends. Constellation Software, for example. CSU (on the TSX). Pic related is the monthly in log scale. I've been thinking about entering a long long hodl on this company for a while. Only problem is it does its thing at a very leisurely pace and is not especially sexy to me whenever it enters buy zone.

Eventually after I get my wad from AMRN my portfolio will be like this:
VFIFX
SWPPX
T
DIS
GE
Comcast
BHGE
I've already got the ball rolling with them just need the major cash infusion to really kick start it hard. Also plan to put a nice pile in the bank in case "shit happens". Plan to add to my Funds each month just as I do my 401k/savings. Got a plan in mind, one that is doable, will provide me a very nice pile of green when I'm 65 as well. The only thing I need is the wad from AMRN. That's the key to it all.

Imagine a man, full of positive energy and excitement about stocks. Imagine a pure and incorruptible enthusiasm for buying shares of companies, so much that you can't help but tell everyone.
You come to a fun internet website full of nice friends; not to brag, not to deceive others, not to try and scrounge for information, but merely to shout out to the world how excited you are about your future retirement prospects.
That's about as well as I can describe it. But just lurk around and you'll get it eventually. The T-babies poster is everything that people involved in the stock market should be. He basically just buys stocks that he likes and comes here and posts about it...

>meme lines and meme patterns work?
Trend lines, no. Never use trend lines as a buy or sell indicator. They are only useful to map out an existing trend and to notify you that you may want to pay attention when a line has broken above or below. I have stopped using them entirely as I can see the short term trends well enough at a glance. Meme patterns, sort of. Meme patterns like head & shoulders and cup & handle are only confirmed several candles later after the pattern emerges. Later than you would want if you were using them to enter or exit a trade.

Support and resistance can work sometimes on individual stocks but try to avoid this sort of thinking on ETFs and indexes.

its good to learn everything you can about the stock market

at the end you learn that none of if matters. Its like gambling you might win at first but that doesnt matter cause sooner or later you will lose and thats when it just goes down hill because of emotions.

If you figured out your not special and just an average Joe and use the average stats to win. Simply because its the average that you will win guess what. you will.

I do a simple leaps and bounds on SPY and stable things I know will grow over time.

and also long term hold on RSP,PTY,QQQ, and VPU. My goal is 350.000 a year simply off of dividend payments. So well see when I get there.

SWSSX has been decoupled from large cap for the past few years, meaning the typical big growth stocks are cheap. You get yearly capital gains, the expense ratio is .04% and the dividends aren't bad either.

I'd recommend it if you wanted small cap in your IRA.

Unfortunately there aren't many good youtube channels on stock trading. Seems like everybody on youtube is mostly trying to sell lessons or access to their group picks or whatever, selling some kind of product anyway. I recommend going to investopedia and just plowing through as many articles as you can on whatever aspect of charts you're curious about.

Once you've got the basic gist on the various approaches traders tend to take, play around with lots of tradingview's built in tools. Bring up some indicators or whatever from the list and do a simple test of comparison on whether the thing suggested buy or sell, or whether it would have provided some sort of useful information to you about the current and future price movement.

Like on the CSU chart I posted above you will see I have SMII and %R displayed at the bottom. These are part of a new strategy I am trying to test this month. Like for the %R (aka William's %R), I think using it the intended way absolutely sucks. Worthless indicator if used the way you're supposed to. This is a suggestion I learned from a youtube forex trader. Basically you use the thing backwards. "Oversold" is potential buy indicator (intended use says you should sell at this point, not buy). It seems to work okay for stocks traded in my preferred time frame. Prone to false signals though so it's no good just by itself.

This is extra funny to me considering those threads weren't even about Campbells. They were about unusually high prices on groceries in various parts of Canada. Some of it was exaggerated for effect, cherry picking prices from the far north and inflated prices in convenience stores, but there was/is a seed of truth to it as well. It's true that a thing of celery cost $5.99+ for a few months this year; ordinary grocery store, large city. Celery is now down to $2.99 but that's still 30% higher than it was last year.

If an index approaches an historical support it may not hold it if the underlying assets are not also in support territory. This makes the concept of support and resistance on an index somewhat unreliable. You are much better off looking at standard deviation from a moving average to determine buy and sell setups on indexes. Very simply, if an index is trading on increasing low volume above a moving average you can assume that the market is losing confidence in further upside. Exact opposite for downside moves; well below and decreasing volume. The entry point for a long or short is the day of or day after you see significant volume come in moving the price in the opposite direction of the short term trend.

>Exact opposite for downside moves; well below and decreasing volume.
I wrote this poorly. Decreasing volume on a trend is early indication of potential reversal, in either direction. Volume spike on opposite price movement is the general area where buy and sell signals occur.

how do i figure out how much it actually costs to short a stock? specifically related to day trading, TD ameritrade here. it doesn't seem like it's calculated in the actual thinkorswim program, and now with $0 fees im curious how much risk im taking on if i ever short anything? i've just been practicing in my paper trading account and it doesn't seem to show any additional fees, how do i know how much i made is actually how much i made from a trade?

more and more i become curious as i've been getting a lot of great trades on my paper account through shorting. i guess it's just the current market/global politics, idk. if shorting isn't free (again, for day trading, i know it's margin but we're talking about completing a trade in like, max 2 hours, pretty much 9:30 to noon at an absolute max because that's when the market fucking dies in terms of movement for some reason). when i start using my system with real money i want to be fucking sure i know what the risk is on every trade, but idk how shorting costs work. ETB only obviously.

also, is SGMO anon around? seems like shit is bottoming out and starting to turn around now, sucks to be down from around $11 to around $8-9 now, but my hope is that I buy some more with the last of my money here ($8.30 looks good on the charts) and i can sell before ASH when it eventually hits $12+, how likely do you think that is to happen? mind you, i'm just looking to exit my position profitably right now, SGMO is still a stock I intend to follow for years, and I've been hearing more good news lately. I'd rather be out of it profitably before ASH and then trade it after we get the news from ASH, which is what i SHOULD have done with the ISTH news in July tbqh (the mistake I've been averaging down from). just need to get myself out of this snafu and then i'll be happy to buy the rumor and sell the news for the next decade, but the short term is too important atm.

I don't know much about the food situation, I know England has sheep and dairies, and I'm sure there's enough canned food and whatnot. I'm not saying anyones going to starve.

But there may be certain items that can't be stocked, or certain foods that will spike in price. There will almost certainly be major slowdowns in shipping caused by unforeseen snags. Maybe an increase in goods spoiling before they can get to market.

you say that like it's a weird thing or something. instead of saying retirement you should say early retirement, that's a better goal to have. the reason why you want to make a lot of money is so you can retire comfortably early. im in the same boat, but my more short-term dream is to quit my day job and become a full time day trader by the end of 2020. if i can just make $50k/year or roughly $1k/week or $200/day in the stock market on average, i'd be perfectly happy with that. if i end up making more, awesome. my goal is just to not have to be reliant upon anyone else, even a boss, to make a living/pay my bills at a middle class level reasonably. if i can do that i'd be happy for the rest of my life, day trading should only be done for like 2 hours max in the morning anyways.

some shares are more expensive to short than others because they are hard to borrow, like ACB)
TDA base rate is now 9% (per year which is = 360 days in the brokerage industry)
https://www.tdameritrade.com/pricing/margin-and-interest-rates.page

I'm aware of the potential infinite loss and I'm aware the compounding effect is lessened because of the lot sizes of options (and my limited capital) but I still see 52%, shit even 25% as very high for selling puts on shares I wouldn't mind owning for life.

noobs go 100% all in with a single tranche only for the security to drop 19% the next week

people who respect risk management will put in money that correlates with the risk. First tranche for a volatile security might only be 2k. If the week prints a hammer and higher highs can be seen, throw another 2k into it. As long as it goes higher and shows gains slowly add into it. Set a mental stop and get out when the target is reached

even if you have an 87% win rate with your stock selection, failure to respect risk management will destroy your account, as going all in on that wrong 13% is all it takes

>TA is bullshit because it assumes all variables are reflected in price history
Not true. TA is just one tool in the drawer of several. Your cash management, stop losses, portfolio diversification, and insurance hedges all play a part to reduce your exposure to unknown variables like that. Some of it is even avoidable well ahead of time. For instance maybe you decide you don't want to trade in the near vicinity of an FOMC meeting, or your stock's earnings report, or a federal election, or whatever due to probability of coin flip scenarios occurring on those occasions.

Calls are the right to buy stocks from someone within a certain time window for a specified price.
Puts are the right to sell stocks to someone within a certain time window for a specified price.
This specified price is called strike price.
It only makes sense to buy calls when you think that the stock price goes up as well as it only makes sense to buy puts when you think that the stock price will go down.
Let's say you buy options which expire in a week for 0.5$ with strike price 5 on a 4.9 stock. You could now buy those stocks ,from that someone who has written the options, for 5 and sell on the market for 4.9. In this case you simply lost 0.1$+0.5$ per option.
Differently said it's a dumbfuck idea. Why does this option then cost 0.5$? Who would pay money for loss? They pay money for the potential the option has (time value) since it only expires next week the stock price has enough time to do something for the option to go green. Let's say it's now a week later and the stock price is 6$. Then you can buy those stocks for 5$ and with your option price of 0.5$ it gives a cost of 5.5$ per share which you then can sell on the market for 6$. Profit is 0.5$(inner value) Since expiry is later today there is also no potential for the option to go greener and time value is pretty much 0.

An option costs whatever the market price is ( naturally regulated by supply and demand).
Since guessing what a fair option price is is halfway complicated Mr Black and Mr Scholes came up with a model. They use strike price, expiry, current option market price, (false) assumptions about the underlying and some other things in order to define following metrics which should help you to judge option pricing.
>delta
How much the option price changes when the stock prices changes. The further a option strike price is away from the stock price the lower delta is.

>> No.15971447

>>15971380
You can also see it as a probability that an option expires in the money aka the good side of the strike price. Delta 0.9 means 90% probability that the option expires on the good side and delta 0.3 means 30% chance.
>gamma
Delta changes as the stock price moves and by how much it changes is described by gamma.
It's basically the derivative of delta.
>theta
As I already said option pricing is alot about potential aka time value. As time (towards expiry) decreases the potential also does ( since the stock has less time to move) and therefore option price also decreases. By how much the option price decreases with time tells you theta.
>High theta bad
>Low theta good
npc.jpg
>implied volatility
Since all of this doesn't quite give us the correct market option price we add a hypothetical dark number called iv to the option price. Is this number big then the option price is very inflated aka expensive. It is on us how to interpret this metric. Traditionally we say the implied volatility is high aka the market expects big swings. Since big swings usually mean big money the market has to counter this by making options expensive and make big money to the usual boring normal money. Iv is calulated on a yearly basis. If you wanna break it down to a day:
d = price*vola/100/sqrt(252)
252 is the number of trading days in a year.
price +- d is the expected average range for the next day.

I’m not so sure. The market has a mind of its own. In this case, the most important thing is how pence would do against the dem candidate, especially if it’s warren.

I was going to write more, but it’s pointless. There’s no reason for Trump to resign, since being president is one of his greatest protections against any indictments, etc. The ability to pardon is an incredible power. Anyone who refuses to testify against him and is held in contempt of court can be pardoned, unless there’s something I’m missing.

But if we get a Biden vs Pence election, then the dem voter turnout would likely suffer, from the loss of drive to vote him out

Before you continue, you do realize you posted a link to inquisitr.. right? The same blog or whatever you call it that talked about Nostradamus predicting Trump's impeachment back in 2017 or Melania cutting Trump's hair (which turned out to be false, like that would even matter.. who gives a fuck?).
I mean, at least use the normal liberal mashup of media outlets instead of just pure fucking garbage. Come on

Put my last ETSY order in before earnings.
If it goes through I'll have a total of 400 shares.

Earnings is on 10/30 Wednesday after the market closes.
I expect good earnings, but if not that is fine, it will just take me more time to hit my goals.

Good luck to everyone. Looks like Brexit is still very much shat. Johnson's acting like he don't give a damn about the deadline extension thing so I'd look for a no deal to happen right on target. Sure he'll toss any hope of keeping his job into the shat but least this whole "Brexit" deal will be over with. Let the chips fall where ever. The world is sick of the whole mess.

Johnson & Johnson is Out to Get the Babies

In a development reminiscent of the recent protest against Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in which a Trump plant advocated the consumption of babies to stop climate change, Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) is now under fire for supposed poison in yet another baby product, this time baby food. J&J had barely started a voluntary recall of 30,000 bottles of baby powder when a new study came out showing that 95% of lab-tested baby foods contained traces of at least one of four heavy metals; arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury. (Arsenic is technically a metalloid but try to tell that to financial media.) One in four tested baby food products contained traces of all four metals.
