College and trades are equally retarded.
One puts you in debt and gives you a worthless degree.
The other gets you stuck in a very specific shitty career for the rest of your life with terrible hours and destroys your health.
Both make you a slave to someone else.

Honestly though, going into the trades sounds like a death sentence to me. You are basically locking yourself into misery for the rest of your life. There is no way to switch careers after being in the trades for so long. Most fields that fall under the blanket term "trades" are terrible, menial labor. The most joyless kind, too. I can't imagine anyone unironically enjoying it, but some people have no choice.
Not saying college is better. But for me, I would rather have a worthless degree and hope for the future. College students sometimes come out smart enough to start a business. Tradies are just dumb rednecks.

Unironically going to college is a meme for most of the self-perceived middle class
If you have no talent whatsoever, no family connections, no savings, become a manual worker like most of the people have been in the past generations.
How the fuck they don’t get that everyone going to college doesn’t mean everyone being a doctor or a lawyer?

College, like any career choice, is a cost benefit analysis
Nowadays with the relative cost being so high though, there are more parameters put on what makes it worth it
Those parameters now basically shake out to be:
1. You have to know what you want to be at 18
2. You have to do a STEM field degree, no meme degrees (unless you go for your PhD in meme, in which case you're in school for ~TEN years)
3. You must go to a public state school unless your parents are already rich enough to pay your whole way
4. The degree you get must usurp 4-5 years of experience in another field you might otherwise join

college isn't a scam, but taking out a 100k loan to major in poetry theory is.
If you major in hard sciences, you should do okay for yourself.
It all depends on whether or not you get a marketable skill out of it.
