My current method is to look at things that seems like they have a good future based off of the companies recent and historical news and invest in them, so for instance global instability is high right now so i know people would want to put their money in safe investment which would be gold or Activision coming with a new MW Game that will sell alot based off nostalgia and the fact that they have a new game engine. The military budget has been increasing every year so military contractors stock will go up as long as the military budget does. These are basically my methods.

the problem with investing in fields that you're not expert in, is that you're reacting on a superficial level to available news/information, while the people taking profit are the ones who understand what's going on at a deeper level? you also sound like you're acting in a way that 'most people' would react to a market, so game theory says that you don't have the optimal strategy (which is to act in a way that takes everyone else's reactions into account)
