7% > 1%.

Buying a house is for morons who failed basic math. Rent and invest the down payment. You will retire 20 years earlier than the home owner with capital locked. Picking out home owners is the easiest way to identify people that have 0 financial sense.

GE is a pretty big company that is basically ingrained into the American conciousness. Won't they just be bailed out like the automotive industry?
That aside doesn't this mean they lied to investors? So someone's going to jail atleast right?

> Won't they just be bailed out
The company wouldn't be raided unless it was a crime scene. There are worthwhile parts (even if they're mundane, like units with lucrative government contracts). If they can get a decent grasp of the real financials, someone would buy it for that reason alone. If it's ONLY for that reason alone, though, it would be steeply discounted.
But I have to believe some units are profitable. It just doesn't make sense to hire outside C-suite executives and they all continue the fraud. Bernie and Enron were able to do what they did because they kept information locked down among a small and consistent group of conspirators.

>I'm sure you guys have stumbled across this strategy before, the basic idea is holding a portfolio of: 40% UPRO (3X S&P500) and 60% TMF (3X LTT) rebalancing quarterly. This portfolio has held up extremely well (including the backtests). This portfolio has an annual return of 18% (backtested to 1987) compared to the S&P 500'S 9% return.
So what do you guys think about this?
Anyone tried it before? Any pointers as to why it's a bad idea and why no one ever recommends it? I'm guessing it's to do with being leveraged right?
Leverage means you got alot more to lose if things go south right? But that's also why it's returns are so high.

What's silly about it all is that investment is necessary for business growth. Basically no economy would be doing aswell as it did without investment. Opening on the stock market aids this greatly and greats companies that generate vast wealth for their host country. America wouldn't be the way they were without investment.
And I know he said index funds but wtf it's fundamentally the same thing. Your investing in the market just letting someone smarter than you do it.

Crawling in my skin
These wounds, they will not heal
Fear is how I fall
Confusing what is real
There's something inside me that pulls beneath the surface
Consuming, confusing
This lack of self control I fear is never ending
Controlling
I can't seem
To find myself again
My walls are closing in
(Without a sense of confidence I'm convinced
That there's just too much pressure to take)
I've felt this way before
So insecure
Crawling in my skin
These wounds, they will not heal
Fear is how I fall
Confusing what is real

Is it any wonder why I'm scared,
If I was a little younger would I
care,
feeling like the walls are growing stronger,
I don't know if this cage can hold me any longer

you never dreamed you'd have to live your life so guarded,
cause they'll find a way to make you feel discarded

I'm not afraid of tomorrow,
I'm only scared of myself,

Sometimes, I hate, the life, I made
Everything's wrong every time
Pushing on I can't escape
Everything that comes my way
Is haunting me taking its sweet time
Holding on I'm lost in a haze
Fighting life to the end of my days
Don't wanna be rude but I have to
Nothing's good about the hell you put me through
I just need to look around

The argument is about active vs passive investment. And they're right index funds are freeloaders.
Active investors do the work and find companies to invest in. Indexes simply take the top N companies by market cap and invest by their proportion. They don't do pe ratios, valualtion or anything like that. They are indirectly relying on active investors to do the work for them.
Active investors are the ones who are taking risk by trying to guess which companies will do better than others. This risk is apparent when you see their returns, half of them underperform half of them overperform the markets. Index funds meanwhile simply take the average without regards to fundamentals.
That said index funds are here to stay because their cost is simply unbeatable by active funds. However as more and more of the market goes passive, there might be more and more opportunities for active investors to get better returns.
After all they're the ones in the driving seat.
Consider a stock the 500th stock of the s&p 500. If the stock dips, active investors can get out of the way ahead of all the passive investors. This arbitrage doesn't exist today as there aren't enough passive investors to dump on. But if 50% of the market is passive, you can bet that simple index restructuring will have massive effect on prices.

Not really true or else there wouldn't be so many index funds right? Look at vanguard they have several index funds with different stocks between them. It could be true that vanguard have special indexes that are way more involved but none of it even comes close to the work done by active investors.
