How does a link oracle know that the data its receiving is legitimate? If someone wants to hack or fool a smart contract what is stopping them from simply hacking the source of data? How does chainlink stop this?

Also what is a derivative?

On which smart contract platform will Link do their so called trillions of dollars worth smart contract oracle work? Eth? Kek. We are years away from real adoption. And the question is this, will the tech ever be needed and adopted? Thats a big if. As of right now Link is a security erc token on Eth with no real use and actually with no future. Are you linkies gonna transfer data on cryptokitties dApps?

How does an armored car delivery company know that the bag of gold they got is real gold?
The answer is it's not their job to know, it's their job to get the bag safely to its destination.

Thats the woe of the main contractor - you have to vet the subcontractors. It happens all the time in the real world.

right but calls the utility of the whole ecosystem into question

anon has a point. if there's a single point of failure an attacker will go for that. smartcontracts won't be able to do everything, but they will fucking own finance
