I've heard stories of husbands surviving financially their divorce because they had a large stash of precious metals they could hide from their wives and cash out.

Don't know how though. I don't think precious metals are a really liquid asset. You are probably going to have to sell at least two digits percent below market value if you want to sell anonymously.
