This isn't true at all. I am not self reliant, but I have a garden and get meat locally sourced, nobody is starving because of me.
What a shit outlook you have anon.

That is a serious question. And this is a serious answer. Yes. Yes, life is a zero sum game. Consider all of your successes and earnings as a positive. No matter how great and seemingly long-lasting, they will eventually be negated by the all destructive force of niggers. Niggers have it even worse, for they only know destruction. Their accomplishments are the death of yours, and ultimately - theirs.

NO.

this is merely an example...

500M live in Europe.. they can only produce 300M (equivalent) worth of food.. where do they get it from?

no, if it were zero sum, none of this would be able to exist by definition. if you're talking about monetary and value transactions in various voluntary systems created by humans at any moment it can be seen as a zero sum game but in general the wealth level is either growing or decreasing so over time it's not a zero sum game

>> No.15129160

does it not come from another country's excess? if so.. then they in turn have mouths to feed that have their fill of X. So they look in "import what they have a "need " for.. cycle repeats...

Earth only has X amount of X

well the first part of what I was saying, yes, because I meant that the existence of anything at all implies not a sum of zero, which since this is /biz/ maybe wasn't what you were asking, is that what you're talking about? for some reading that I think deals with the idea check out Carl Jung's VII Sermones ad Mortuos:

No life is iterated games of cooperation called Traveler's Dilemma and Hawks & Doves.

The basic principal is that the whole of an ecosystem is improved through cooperation, but the wellbeing of individuals is incrementally greater through defection. In both models and reality, a split (typically floating around 80/20) between cooperation and defection 'win,' so you tend to see a lot of emergent social behaviors to mediate the formation of coalitions. Prokaraotic cells, multicellular organisms, inter-species cooperation, and other emergent effects of evolution all stem from the fact that improving the ecosystem as a whole benefits all organisms within it to a greater degree than the average organism would benefit from a pure lassez faire 'tragedy of the commons.'

Agreed with OP.
Conservation of energy means nothing is created nor destroyed, ergo zero sum. Even seemingly irrational systems like human behavior could be boiled down to zero sum interactions if you had enough data.
That being said, there has probably never been a truly even zero sum interaction between two humans since the beginning of time, which fuels the mirage that this isn't zero sum. It is.
Someone always wins when an interaction occurs, even if it's just by burning marginally less calories in the process.

you can print more money into the world, but that doesn't make more wealth come into being
you can make more wealth come into the world (building/creating something, writing a novel, studying nature and publishing your findings, writing a hypothesis on the function of reality), but that doesn't produce more money

the bottom line: money is a medium for the exchange of wealth/value
a marvelous tool—quite possibly the greatest tool humanity has ever realized—but nothing more

the only aspect of reality that one could reasonably argue is "zero sum" is the fact that there is a finite amount of total potential energy in our observable universe—and while it may seem pretty irrational to equate the observable universe's energy to something that humanity may ever have a grasp on, even the total potential energy limited to the earth and its resources alone stands to make even the wildest and most outlandish predictions for humanity's prosperity and energy usage look wildly insignificant

in practical terms, there is nothing "zero sum" about life
your prosperity does not inherently come at the expense of another living thing—and, in fact, you would benefit if you were in possession of or earning a consistent amount of money during a time of the production of many goods and services and the lack of the printing and distribution of any new currency, as the price of these goods would drop as a result of their abundance
but, i'm getting ahead of myself
the burden of proof, in this case, would be on the person who assumes that it does, and that some sort of action must be taken against people who want to prosper
so—if you do wish to take such action against people seeking prosperity, it's all eyes and ears from us, mate
show the irrefutable proof, if you've got it

that's why market makers exist, yes they're taking the other side of your trade, potentially even what that was bad for them, but they mitigate and overcome this risk by collecting fees on each trade, and by stop/liq hunting

Also, starvation is a consequence of improper utilization of resources. An unfarmed field is as much zero sum as a farmed one, since the output of a farmed field will always be equal to the efforts made to farm it. Regardless of efficiency, the effort and outputs will always add up to zero.
Then you get to the human systems, and all notion of the zero sum game is thrown into the wind as the farmer gets drowned by regulations and middlemen that improperly translate the value of their work for society by the time it gets to any consumer.

Value of goods and currency is relative. When an exchange happens is because what the other person gives up is of less value than what he obtains. Both parties have a net gain.

A dollar for a can of soda might be too much if you already have a pallet with 300 cans sitting in your store. But for the guy who has gone for a jog in the midst of summer after running ten miles the dollar means nothing compared to the hydration the drink has to offer to him. It's the same for every other possible exchange.
