Why not? They're not that intimidating, do some reading it's a much safer and passive option than one of the businesses you're thinking of.

i dislike the idea of not being able to sleep next to my money. safer or not, i also consider that once properly set-up, a business can net you more safe money than the numbers game for a smaller risk. im 25, and i have a lot more patience to lose. i believe i can set up a stable business until im 30, and retire at 40 if i start in the near future. by retiring i mean just sitting back and managing my managers and occasionally dipping among the workers to optimize shenanigans. business usually runs stable because the only problems are personal, and those problems project onto the business. by picking niches that rely on consumption, i expect to at least have a pretty solid amount of traffic and execution.

Being paranoid about your money is going to limit your gains. The best returns I’ve made have come from private equity and private real estate funds with 8-10 year lockup periods.

That's not the case. With index funds you require zero upkeep and your risk is much lower due to being extremely diversified.

Businesses have FAR more headaches and risk than you think.

Biden, Warren and Trump are all hawks so defense really is the surest bet. Not a massive amount of growth but I can't think of anything more bulletproof than General Dynamics, Lockheed, United Technologies, etc.

The issue (could be a positive too to be fair) with defense ETF's is they have a shitload of Boeing, and theres a lot of uncertainty surrounding them right now with the 737MAX and delays for the 777X. If the situation around MAX gets any worse it's continued existence is going to start being seriously doubted. That sucks if you're really just betting on the defense industry because your fund would be negatively impacted (in a big big way) by an impact in the commercial aviation market. Uncertainty goes both ways though and if 2020 proves to be the year of redemption for the 737MAX you've got a lot of room for that stock to grow.

But either way defense. Either buy ETF's that have Boeing or spread it out yourself among the others.

I heard Bernie Madoff offers a fund that gives a solid 1% return every month, guaranteed. He also deals with Columbian and Russian mafias so there shouldn't be a problem with your money source.

If you want something safe, diversified and not shitcoins, index funds are the way to go. They're all regulated by an IRS code that makes them tax-exempt as long as they diversify their portfolio and distribute most of their income. You get good long term growth and dividends from it.

If you want higher yields you can invest in REITs or real estate focused MLPs.
