Its a binding contract for how coins are created and distributed that is upheld by people who mine the currency. So instead of a central entity you need to trust to uphold the contract its a bunch of anon entities acting in their own interest.

A smart contract is just like any other kind of contract or agreement. The main difference is that smart contracts don't require you to trust someone.
