Fundamentally, it works if you can handle the low margins.
You're seeing ads about it because ad networks are serving you ads based on your interest.

The goal with dropshipping IMHO for any given product should be to build enough volume to re-negotiate your dropshipper margins with the manufacturer. If you have a high enough volume of sales you can get better rates. I've seen 30-40% for dropshippers, but you have to sell a lot.

If you don't have that volume, next best goal is to save up for the minimum orders (for a given product) and have a fulfillment center do the shipping for you. You give the fulfillment center a cut, but you have higher margins. And now at this point you should be able to purchase more than the minimum order and increase your margins even more.

Keep doing this for each product.

And then explore other avenues that don't require advertising expenditures, such as social media, SEO, email, re-targeting, etc. If you have a good store and a good brand you can grow that brand using the above-mentioned channels and create a nice revenue stream, mostly automated if you set it up correctly.
