The only value of buying stocks apart from VC investing or any other form of investing where the capital goes into the operational budget is as an incentive mechanism to make the people who do those things do them.

That people buy stocks on the public market makes those initial important and more risky investments happen because then they have a chance to unload with a big profit later.

I guess there are also some additional mechanisms like funding via dilution and convertible debt fundraising, but ultimately all this rent seeking is a big huge side effect of the need for incentives for early investment into companies so that they may try to do what they wish to do.
