That's still less than half of what Americans pay. The quality of public health care varies a lot between different European countries. It's quite good here in Scandinavia and A LOT cheaper than the American health care system. Google health care costs per capita by country. I'm a big fan of free markets, but privatizing health care really does add a ton of extra unnecessary costs. The American health care system has several other problems that I won't get into..

Reminder that U.S. firms are single-handedly responsible for over 60% of all pharmaceutical innovation throughout the world, and who knows how much when it comes to treatments

European countries receive practically free drugs by applying tariffs, threatening to break these US firms' IP, enforcing price controls and not investing dick into medical innovation (largely opting out of the market forcing U.S. firms pick up their slack) themselves.

European countries that happen to dominate the market on certain pre-existing life saving compounds like insulin (Novo Nordisk, Sanofi) turn around and charge US customers many times over what they charge their own.

European countries often fail to meet even half their budgetary commitment to NATO (2% of GDP), even as Russia and China begin to make power plays on the world stage.

European countries don't have an underclass of tens of millions of obese n-words clogging up hospitals (current obesity rate in US is something like 65%)

European countries often have a much higher population of medical practitioners, especially general practitioners, whereas in the US something like 80% of doctors are specialists

Despite all of this, European countries are taxed as if they were in a state of total war to pay for their benefits systems, with notable examples like Norway whom are so overtaxed their government could give each citizen nearly $200,000 USD but will never choose to do so.

Treating the populations of Europe or the role our respective countries play on the world stage as if they're symmetrical is completely short sighted and will prove be a disaster in due time (and I firmly believe it will be given the opportunity). The only reason the Europeans can laud their terrible, flawed system without embarrassment is because they're dunning-krugers ignorant of the geopolitical and social circumstances that's led to the U.S.' unenviable situation in the first place.

Americans are forced into debt, Europeans are born into it.

A lot of American pharma innovation is based on European basic research and applied research. You conveniently "forgot" to mention that. Or perhaps you just didn't know. The EU does a lot more (relatively speaking) basic/applied medical researh than the US. A lot of medicine companies choose to locate themselves in the US because it's such a profitable market, not neccesarily because 'muh the US is numbah 1'. Just look at how many employees a company like Novo Nordisk Employs in the US despite doing most of their research in Denmark.

Nice strawman Lars, the post wasn't about why America is great, only utilitarian given the dubious honor of what its place in the world is at this point in time and with all due consideration for the dysgenic multitudes that live there.

The post was more about how Europe is fortunate, in what ways they might be opportunistic-and also how despite these multitude of social and geopolitical advantages on account of these things their people are still being robbed relative to what they get.

Because the US problems are so acute it's easy to ignore the US government's hand in why things are as bad as they are and blame it on the system the US purports to represent (laissez-faire capitalism) rather than what's actually happening. Government largess such as the Orphan Drug Law of 1983 (which provides an extended domestic monopoly to drug makers) being one such example.

>>13367946
Think for a second lad and tell me why the state collected petroleum fund exhumed from the state controlled petroleum industry (22% of total gdp btw) couldn't be used to alleviate the renowned state mandated tax burden of private Norwegians?

A surplus means that a government is taking too much vs what services it is providing, I don't blame Norwegians who don't have any say in the matter for turning it into an economic dick measuring contest but it's not really something to be proud of.

Insurance is the middle man that leeches off half the healthcare money WITHOUT ACTUALLY DOING ANYTHING.

How do you explain europeans having healthcare for all yet PAY HALF? the math doesn't add up buddy, should their costs be MORE instead of HALF?

I'm actually going to put effort into this post in explaining why universal healthcare is more or less unfeasible in the United States. For context: I'm a doc. Culturally, there are huge barriers to universal healthcare in the U.S. due to the way medical training is conducted as well as the founding principles of the economic progress (capitalism as opposed to communism). In the other countries with universal healthcare that you are referencing (namely Germany since that's the classic example of a "good" system) students go straight into medical training with no debt. Here in the states, we give up a decade at the minimum to become doctors while accruing massive amounts of debt (the average figure is trending towards 500k debt for the average doctor in the next few years). Universal healthcare by the kindest projections would wipe doctor salaries by 25% at a minimum (this is going off what happened in Canada, which has the most comparable system). Within medicine, the culture is shifting rapidly to depressive tactics. One doctor a day gets the rope. That number is only increasing and universal healthcare, while being a pretty idea, would obliterate the quality of healthcare in the United States. Even with debt forgiveness, the simple fact of the matter is that to become a doctor in the US is to sacrifice your life. How could you pay someone back for that? For that reason, the quality of applicants to medicine would drop dramatically, and the already existing problem of primary care shortage would get worse. Especially with the current trends of nurses getting licensed with little to no training and being given independent practices. Even though the current public disposition is "fuck doctors" the simple fact of the matter is that everyone comes into contact with the healthcare system at some point in their lives. Spitting in the face of that any more than is already occurring is dangerous as the current landscape of medicine is very volatile.

Your refusal to address any of the content in my post and resorting to blatant poisoning of the well ousts you as someone who clearly lacks any interest in having an insightful discussion. However, your point about healthcare costs is interesting, so I'll address that for the sake of others in this thread. Costs in the united states are primarily due to administrative bloat. Very little of the money in the medical bills is actually for the medical services rendered and even less of that is money that I as the practicing physician see. If you want to paint a target for healthcare costs, look at the people in administration in the hospitals first who receive salaries for promoting "medical wellness" and drown hospitals in paperwork and bureaucratic red tape.

I'm gonna buy the dip. If single payer happens companies can't price gouge as hard but the ones who end up getting supply agreements for larger states will have so much added sales volume the reduced margin won't matter. Just need to research your picks ahead of time. over all I think the healthcare sector market cap would remain mostly unchanged but we'd see a massive decoupling of healthcare stocks from each other as clear winners and losers get decided.

But biz hates money so they'll all probably just sell low buy high.

Again, while I realize this upsets you (I'm judging from your previous response to my post which you clearly didn't read before initially replying). I am a physician. I know where the costs come from because I'm the one doing the billing and seeing what goes where. Insurance companies are indeed a problem, however the majority of cost in hospital bills is due to administrative bloat. The administrators in hospitals are not healthcare professionals and they very rarely have any sort of medical training. Oftentimes, they're just business grads who decided to come work the hospital the same way they would any other business: by nickel and diming patients. I highly doubt any doctor is going to say otherwise. The reason I'm putting emphasis on the doctor aspect is because we are the ones who bring money into hospitals. Doctors do the billing, doctors order tests, and doctors are the ones responsible for the flow of money.

Even if we ignored the illegal immigration (https://youtu.be/m7zPXWDqj5Q)), the obesity (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kCPqprGRnU)), the lack of general practitioners and doctors per capita in general, these things alone would skew spending in Europe's favor.

It is all unnecessary bureaucratic administration, crimally marked up pharma drugs, unnecessary tests and procedures (especially for patients that should be CMO) and 3-10% profit margins of insurance companies. My initial point was moreso about justifying the ludicrous medical education system as is in a system where physician compensation drops as much as it would under universal healthcare. Effectively, incentivizing students to continue to pursue medicine in spite of the disproportionate debt burden. I do want to ask though, do you honestly see a world where physician salaries would rise under universal healthcare? From my perspective, we have a gigantic target on our backs from the perspective of the general populace as the "1%" and I personally feel that any reduction of our salaries would be generally viewed as a positive side effect by most, hence why I focused on the debt burden of current students first. It's easy to forget about all the garbage in college and medical school when we are graduated and paid off. As a professional question, do you see radiation indications increasing or decreasing in the future? I'm asking this as a general question as some students of mine are interested in radiation oncology and I can't give a satisfactory response on that field in particular (out of my lane).

Europe does not meet their NATO military alliance expenditure obligations, often by even half, forcing the U.S. to pick up their slack to stymie Russian and Chinese military ambitions, and if they did they would have to pay even higher taxes than they already do making their system less tenable.

Europe pays a small fraction for the drugs that US firms must spend billions of dollars to develop (thanks to ever more stringent FDA standards) on threat of intellectual larceny, were the costs distributed more fairly they would have to pay even higher taxes than they already do making their system less tenable

Europeans are only just beginning to experience the preponderance of non-European immigrants that the United States has been facing since the mid 20th century (though there's always been an underclass of 10-13% n-words). As they readily embrace their "cosmopolitanism" even with much of southern Europe beginning to function as the border states in the U.S. do, their system will be made less tenable

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxJ3Lsi3Vgk

The obesity rates in most European countries is far lower than that of the U.S., if they weren't, their system would be made FAR less tenable

If Europe had the problems the U.S. does, their system would be untenable, because it's barely tenable now with the most sheltered conditions that could conceivably exist.

Regarding your first question. Physician's are the top 0.3% of society in terms of education, risk, hours worked, intelligence, productivity, etc. ON AVERAGE (not all of us) we are better in almost every way to 99.7% of the population. However, out salary is only in the top 2% (only 31% of us are in the top 1%) and this sounds small but it is the difference between our current $250k-$300k salary to our rightful $1mill+ salary. We have been rolling over to these lesser beings for the sake of "patient care", but what about justice? We need to stand together and bring back the golden age where nurses knew their place, and physicians ran healthcare, and the public had humility in their stupidity and failure to become one of us. And where we were compensated fairly.

As far as reinstilling the fear of god in the general public, I feel that is something that will only come as a result of patient deaths associated with all the corner cutting that is currently occurring, not as a result of any unified front from physicians. Not the implication I was intending to make, my apologies. I was just trying to state that the united states in particular is moreso loaded towards the capitalistic mindset almost as a culture rather than an economic philosophy. Hence, the healthcare system has largely developed as a reflection of that, and an overhaul would be significantly difficult to do as the rest of the path leading to medicine (education in particular) is not compatible with a free healthcare system. Actually it's the balance that's creating the most corruption.

I make 180K USD a year working as a lead software engineer in silicon valley and I'm voting Bernie. Yeah my taxes will go up (specifically due to increasing the social security cap), but I understand the benefit to society. I have friends from college who aren't working in tech and they are barely scraping by :(

The thing that's awesome about individualism though is that if you like your friends enough then go ahead and give them free money! Nobody will stop you.

But forcing everyone else to pay for social services that they'll never use to help fund a dependent consumerist population is not cool.

the thing about individualism is that if you aren't a millionaire then voting to tax millionaires is in your best individualistic interests. individualism eats itself up

1. You pay $5k/month in rent and high af taxes so you are not actually successful at that salary in that location
2. Your non-tech friends are suffering because of establishment politicians giving all our jobs to China, India, and Mexico. That's not capitalism it's crooked government, which all big ones are, BS would only make it worse
3. Trump is lowering taxes and bringing back jobs, helping both you and your friends

Old school, old-testament cuckold fantasist, more like it. Socialism only works when there is cultural homogeneity— Sweden, for instance, is no longer culturally homogenous.

Nothing you said is true.
1) I pay about 1500$ per month in rent. I’m doing great considering I’m only 29 and can already afford a 200K+ downpayment.
2) There are tons of jobs here, however most suck due to the sharing economy model eating any quality, non-tech job. It has nothing to do with illegals and “establishment politicians”. In fact, the local governments here are big providers of quality jobs. My city passed a small sales tax increase last election in order to raise funds to rebuild city streets and its worked great so far. Moreover ironicaly the biggest use of illegal labor here in California is conservative farmers employing illegals to pick fruits and veggies.
3) I ended up paying more this year in taxes due to reduced deductions and higher withholdings.
