What happens when nodes become expensive to operate? Why would anyone run a node without being compensated?

There is a thing called indirect incentive because they would save on not having to pay fees vs the 3% visa jew.

Also why don't you ask the people that run Bitcoin nodes without mining.

businesses depending on nano will run representative nodes for their own sake

I do. Not really that expensive yet though. If bitcoin is going to work, theyre going to have to raise blocksize, making it more expensive to run a node. Probably BCH or BSV

What if we get a great depression 2.0, where this business is not sustainable, and costs of operating a massive global payment system are to high? I realise this would need to happen on a global scale, so might not be as likely.

Miners were supposed to rely on transaction fees from users of the network before core went nuts. The current block reward is not going to be there forever. If you disinsentivice miners, you'll have no miners. The whole incentive structure of BTC is kinda broken right now.

Daily reminder nano is blockchain 1.1 which will soon deem it more useless than it is now. Nano devs are some of the shadiest In crypto. To think people actually put money into this shit is beyond me.
