The government can (and should) protect property rights. Important for businesses. Other than that? Not really much. I believe in universal healthcare (so thats an entirely seperate industry to argue about). Enviornment protection (carbon taxes), waste management (just making laws determinung where it goes, not of the companies that actually college it), and really thats about it. Other than protecting individual rights there is nothing that they should offer or intervene with in the market.

Companies do not buy out other companies and make monopolies, this just isnt true, at least in the free market. You cant create monopolies because someone else can just create a company doing exactly what you do for less. What ACTUALLY happens is larger companies recieve bailouts, subsidies, and favorable legislation because they buy out government power. This makes them able to do things such as drop prices below market value and take a loss due to the fact that the government is dumping subsidies to keep them from going bankrupt. Or legislation like ISPs have done which have made it impossible for a small ISP to compete, the moment they do they have 20 lawsuits down their f'n throat.
