climbing the wall of worry with the help of bear greed edition

>I'm new to the stock market, what stocks should I buy?
Before you buy anything, make a brokerage account and read investopedia articles and/or the books in the OP list. If you don't have a broker, you can't buy stocks and if you blindly buy things without understanding how the stock market works or doing any research on the individual stocks you're buying, you will lose money and it will be entirely your fault.

If you are currently 100% equities you could consider transitioning to a safer position as the market climbs. (meaning sell 5% to cash for every 25 points the SPX gains). also you can set stop losses if you aren't going to watch.
It is such a small amount it doesn't really matter. As long as you are in a good degree you should focus on that, internships, and the networking meme.

the current market zeitgeist is that the US federal reserve won't hike rates. some people see downside (what is the fed so worried about that they feel they need to suddenly and massively reverse forward policy in such a short span of time?), some people see upside (the fed is a pussy waiting to be fucked, if the market goes down they will cut rates and QE so the easy money will last forever).

It is a bit of a mess. the fed should NOT have pussied out. The news seems to mean we will keep drifting up until the market can take no more, then we crash. but who knows besides Jerome

Alright, /smg/.

So, there was a post here saying 'Dividends are your friends' and after doing some research, I got hyped up and wanted to test the waters and after doing so, I found that they are either not your friend or I'm doing something wrong, so which is it. The pic shows how much I would have lost if I picked these 3 stocks, whose ex-dividend date is today, and I sold at the beginning of the normal market hours.

What I got out of this is that, yes, you will get paid a dividend, but the company takes money out of the stock equal to the value of the dividend (which makes me not understand the point of a dividend).

Buy into the cloud market, it is truly the future. I work at a medium sized tech company, and nearly every company is migrating (at varying speeds) towards cloud architecture with container based delivery.
AWS holds a huge share of the market because of how cheap it is, but if you are looking for a growing market get in Microsoft; they are stealing the market share with Azure; stuff like Azure Devops replacing VSTS and more and more competitive pricing makes them a much more sound decision for any company that is looking to make the migration from local VMs to cloud

My point is better to wipe out with your $75 allowance money than to wipe out with $10k. I'm not going to tell these kids to gamble, the advice I give my IRL friends is to start low beta and only move up in risk tolerance as you gain experience. That should be obvious to anyone, but if it costs some fool on robinhood a couple hundred dollars to learn that lesson then it is money well spent.

that's the point of letting your money do the work for you, instead of making 200 decisions and taking up hours of your time you make one good decision and profit much more off of it with much less time put in.
Your time is money; If I make 200 decisions on an asset and each take 10 minutes and I end up making 1000 dollars off of it, it's 30$ per hour of your time.
If I make one good decision that takes me an hour to flesh out and it nets me 500 dollars because I wasn't babysitting the stock, thats 500 an hour
Stop wasting your time

you don't have to be active if you don't want to. But if people do, then great! especially young people can learn a lot about themselves, the economy, group behavior etc. for free in an active environment by participating in the markets. If you want to think of it as a game to play on your phone, something to check during free moments, that is fine.
If you want to step away from it for a while or forever, that is fine too. But I think it is something that people should be encouraged to dabble in.
When it is time to focus on the money you'll know because you'll be making a lot more than $500. But if you're investing money with an amount of money you could fit in your wallet, it should be treated as a learning experience. And a learning experience should mean starting low volatility.

What did Facebook have back in the day though? It was a "nothing company" as well. Even Google, it was a search engine back when a few major players already dominated search (altavista, yahoo, etc...). Amazon was an online bookstore.

All of them collect user data and sell it to advertisers, advertisement is the primary business. Amazon of course came a long way from that, but even now Amazon sellers pay for ads to feature their products on the first page in their respective categories. A bet on SNAP is a bet on the potential of their platform to monopolize mindshare of the future consumers. Whether they can do it properly or not AND retain the people - thats another questions. I am bullish on SNAP, thats why I got calls. If you wanna look into it deeper - sign up for snap for advertisers, and compare it with facebook for business (their advertising platform), its an interesting space.

I see a big difference, structurally, between the product that snapchat is and the products that google and facebook are.
I see big differences in the way that the technology and social media environments are in 2019 vs 2009 or 1999.
Facebook, Google, and Amazon all have growth opportunities that they are capitalizing on. new products and services, buying up interesting stuff, etc.
Snap (AFAIK) is a one-trick pony. They have less engineers and won't be able to do the big work quick that the big boys will be able to grab up. And they won't be as nimble as a startup.
Just my uninformed opinion when I see a 14B valuation (that has climbed form half that in the last 3 months) on what I consider a 'stationary' tech stock.
I hope your calls do well ! :)

That was debunked some time ago. It was half ass linked to diacetyl, an ingredient formerly used in butter and custard type flavors. There are no known cases of popcorn lung from vaping. It started when American Lung Association put out a warning that vaping -may- cause etc etc. In any case, if you shop for vape flavorings nowadays the vendors are all happy to state that none of their products contain diacetyl. No.

Economists encourage people to buy ETFs because of better returns and lower fees than managed funds.

All the other advertisements and tvshows and podcasts, etc. talk about individual stock investment and try to sell people on TA and options and other fancy things to give them an edge over other investors.

Brokers do advertise managed funds for people who “just don’t have the time” for all that wall st. stuff, and then cite their performance (in a bull run, not compared to ETFs or S&P average, not advertising how much the commissions and fees take out after compounding)

Cramer is unique in this on that he now “insists” that your first 10k go into an S&P index fund. Says he has nothing against those kinds of investors, but then goes on to glorify the returns from individual stock picking.

Really depends. I think anybody who sold right now and is green will probably be be content when reality catches up with the market this year. But if you sell before a constant downturn, you can always hop back in at a lower price. Don't even have to sell 100 percent.

>>13082655
Well sure. But you don't have to be all in on meme trades or stable investments. Nobody can predict the market, but you're a fool to ignore low risk with moderate gain, and a bigger fool to let something drop 10 percent and continue to hold when it has no potential bounceback. I personally let 50 percent of my stocks be day to week trading, with another 50 percent being split between divies and stable etfs.
