If you aren't pouting all of your money into Etherium (18.87 at time of this post) you are a fucking tool and deserve eternal poverty edition.

Ethereum is a decentralized platform that runs smart contracts: applications that run exactly as programmed without any possibility of downtime, censorship, fraud or third party interference.

These apps run on a custom built blockchain, an enormously powerful shared global infrastructure that can move value around and represent the ownership of property. This enables developers to create markets, store registries of debts or promises, move funds in accordance with instructions given long in the past (like a will or a futures contract) and many other things that have not been invented yet, all without a middle man or counterparty risk.

The project was crowdfunded during August 2014 by fans all around the world. It is developed by the Ethereum Foundation, a Swiss nonprofit, with contributions from great minds across the globe.

We just hit a new high; trend will probably continue through ~6/19, followed by a retread at the midpoint of $13 & whatever the eventual bubble is. I'd guess that could be around $17-18, in the near term. Then, in the long term (>1 mo), we're looking at maybe $15 for the valuation; starting in early July, get into BTC, as the halvening will drive prices up probably ~15-20%, at least, in the next month, and maybe more long term.

Right now, my long-term money is with BTC due to the impending reward drop; my day-trades are in eth, tho.

Lets do the math.

I'm going to work with $100 here, seeing as everyone's poor.

$100=4.9 eth (or .12 BTC)

4.9 eth nets you 19.6 MH/s for 1 month. That hash rate will give you ~$103 at current eth prices in 1 month.

.12 BTC nets you 25 MH/s for 1 month. That hash rate will give you ~$130 at current eth prices in 1 month.

So long as it's not a scam, there is the potential to grow your investment. However, it's potentially less profitable than starting your own rig, in the long run. Pricing could change, and if you have $1000 to burn, you can get your own rig to hash 60 MH/s as long as your parts last.

If anyone wants to learn how to build a rig, I can give you details.

Well, in all honesty it's pretty simple.

1) Get EthOS ($39 shipped on an SSD; find it on GPUshack, or just google it)

2) Get a motherboard with as many PCIex1 or PCIex16 inputs as you can (I'm partial to this one for its cost effectiveness - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157471&cm_re=asrock_mining-_-13-157-471-_-Product))

3) Get a cheap CPU for your mobo (mine was $50 - the heatsink and fan for it cost almost as much as the CPU itself lol)

4) Get AMD R9 GPUs with at least 4GB internal memory - the most cost effective I've found are the R9 290s (~$200 each)

5) Get a PCIex1-x16 adapter for each GPU that won't be attached to the single x16 main GPU slot on your mobo (something like this - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA6J32GU7224&cm_re=pcie_x1-x16_adapter-_-9SIA6J32GU7224-_-Product))

6) Get at least 2GB RAM for each GPU

7) Get a power supply that can handle the power you're putting into the cards and mobo; each card typically sucks ~140 watts, the rest of your components combined will probably eat up another 150-200 watts, so do the math. If you're getting a 2-card rig, you'll need at least a 450 watt power supply. If you want to fill all 6 slots, you need 1200+ watts of power.

8) If you order it all today, it should show up in about a week. In total, it'll probably cost you ~$1000 to get a 3-GPU starter rig that can net you 80 MH/s forever, and could feasibly expand to 160 MH/s for another ~$630-650. The starter rig would net you 1 eth every ~36 hours, or ~20 eth/month. You'll have made all your money back on a 3-GPU rig once you hit ~50 eth (at current prices), which is 2.5 months. If you spring for a 6-GPU rig, your ROI period is slightly shorter, since you'll be making ~40 eth/month, but the total cost will be closer to $1650, which is ~80 eth (currently), meaning you'll net your break even at almost exactly 2 months.

If you found this useful, donate! ;-)

I wouldn't say that. Both are pretty intrinsically linked; pretty much anything that runs on the ether platform will accept BTC as payment, so anything that's a positive shock for Eth is also going to boost BTC.

They're both going to skyrocket in value long-term; the real question is what happens once 1 BTC is worth $10,000+; transaction prices at that price level would be significant.

No, I didn't take electricity into account. If you calculate electricity prices, you're obviously significantly extending your break-even; it's all highly variable though, since your prices are very different from someone else's.

I will say that my electricity costs didn't change much, but that's likely more to do with the fact that my electricity bills tend to go down in the summer (more light, less lights on in the evening); I can't vouch for how much it costs to power 1300 watts.

In thinking about this more, I'm going to guess that having a rig will probably keep my electricity costs relatively even year-round. I keep it in my basement and live in a northern climate in the midwest, so in the summer the costs of my rig is offset by the fact that we don't use lights as much, and in the winter it's offset because I won't need to use as much power to keep my house heated.

At least, that's how I'm imagining this. The rig is more of a hobby than anything, though.

>After the attack, there quickly emerged suggestions of forking the Ethereum blockchain to recover/refund the lost Ether. The fact that these terrible proposals are getting even the slightest bit of traction, must surely be explained by the crew that has gathered around Ethereum.

>One of Bitcoin’s strengths is that it cannot be altered. Even after 700.000 Bitcoins went missing in the Mt.Gox scandal, such an obvious theft if there ever was one, there was never any talk of forking to recover the stolen funds. Why? Because one of the most important features of a cryptocurrency is that it is automated, beyond the control of a select few. To make sure it retains its value, it should be impossible to tamper with. Altering the past to make sure that someone who “didn’t deserve” to get value, doesn’t get value, is a very dangerous slippery slope, and could destroy the confidence in the entire platform.

>Ethereum has an important choice to make. Will it cater to the newbie whiners who have lost vast amounts of money placing a risky bet on an unproven, alpha-stage decentralized application, and in the process destroy its own credibility? Or will it holds its head high and be true to the cryptocurrency "codex", which is that there is no such thing as risk-free investment? The risk of bugs and other problems should be baked into the market price of any given project, and the fact that it wasn't is witness of irrationality, a.k.a a bubble. Why should TheDAO, the fastest growing and richest cryptocurrency project the world has ever seen, be given such a huge break and be bailed out?

>This is the big test. If Ethereum shows weakness and bails out TheDAO, it might lead to a long-term depression and stagnate the growth of the platform. I cannot fathom how it could benefit anyone in the community, except the suckers who lost their life savings in TheDAO hack.

That's simply not the case, no matter what, he has no control over this, at the end of the day the miners have to make the decision which is a community decision not a central decision, to put that in other words more than 50% of the entire ethereum network has to be in favor of this decision for it to go through, that's not central it's distributed.

10% of the entire network had currency in it, not just Vitalik. As a result 10% of the network want a solution to this problem.

A solution has been proposed and more than 50% of the network must agree with it or it will not happen.

I'm brand new. I've been fucking with bitcoin for years obviously, because drugs, but I just started getting into finance a few months ago. Figured cryptos would be a good training ground because so volatile and also no regulation. Easy margin (which I'm learning to be careful with). But yeah I only planned to go all in on it until $25. We... didn't make it that far.

Because 10% is not the majority of the network... So if the majority of the network agrees to repeal transactions from a fucking blockchain then I'm naturally suspicious when only 10% of the network had a stake in it. Mostly it is the undoing transactions part that throws alarms, especially when the people who were robbed were the people who designed the system. That feels very centralized to me.

You're speaking like this has already happened. An additional 41% of the network who does not have a stake in this have to make the same decision as well, and this has not happened yet.

I don't understand what your concern or suspicion is or how this is centralized.

>>1319067
Why blame Vitalik for anything? People are asking for a solution and he gives them one, it's up to the community to decide if that solution is actually chosen. If you think he's an idiot then simply don't vote in favor of it.

If anyone is to blame it is The DAO owners and DAO members for complaining.

What part of a community decision like this one is bad anyway? I am in awe at how stupid this conversation has been, we have people complaining it's not decentralized while others are complaining that the distributed community having the power to make decisions like this is bad.

Hey wanna be /biz/ analysts, share some thoughts with me.

The image I've posted are from btcmarkets.net, one of Australia's leading ETH/Bitcoin exchanges.

Here's what I'm thinking. IN the bottom graph, ETH/AUD you can clearly see the price spike on the 14th-16th of June before plunging back to normal after news of the hack

However, on the ETH/BITC price chart (top) the spike is never there. You can see where it plateaus on the 15th of June, but otherwise the price never really achieved anything against bitcoin. Should I have been using this as a more accurate guide to ETH's true value?

Also of course

They act like children. They wanted the exchange owners to stop trading and freeze ETH. And want to hardfork eth.

They are creating a dangerous precedence that some funds on the blockchain can be locked (the blacklisting feature to mining clients they are right now pushing, i.e the softfork,) or some transactions can be reverted (hardfork) opens up the Ethereum, both big miners, the foundation and the devs themselves to subpoenas and the like that can and will be abused in the future.

I'm not an investor in ETH (I own no coins) but I'm pretty sure it continues to be a really exciting project from a purely academic perspective. Luckily there are a lot of get-rich-quick kids thanks to bitcoin who are willing to fund the project and provide a good testing ground.

For the record, I like Ethereum too, academically, as well as blockchain stuff in general. It's the shills I can't stand. I think shilling and the pump and dump attitude toward it is part of what's holding back the technology from it's potential. It's like there's this parasitical energy surrounding the tech, and we see it manifest in the shilling, manipulation, gloating.. all of it. It's super immature shit, that makes me seriously think that it's mostly 13-17 year old kids with like $38 in crypto who are the loudest and most obnoxious proponents of it all.
