Lets say Dell sells a laptop for $800, they would have to buy parts which costs money and assemeble it and stuff etc etc

Then they ship it out, you recieve the laptop, how do they make profit?

If an individual wants to buy the parts and assemble it themselves it will cost more because Dell can guarantee the manufacturer a steady supply of business which equals less parts sitting on the shelves which would cost the manufacturer money. In turn the manufacturer can go to their raw materials provider and negotiate a better price now because they will require more raw materials to manufacture and fulfill the bulk contract with Dell. The raw materials provider can now negotiate a better price on their equipment because they will be buying more equipment more frequently... Ad infinitum.

Dell can get computer parts much cheaper than you or I, so what you're really getting when you buy a computer from a large brand is that slight discount brought on by their purchasing power. They obviously take enough profit to keep them happy and growing, but it is still cheaper for the consumer than trying to buy directly from the manufacturers.
