For low level jobs it's used as a filter to ensure you're not a complete manchild and can stick to something.

For more competitive jobs it's the best way of measuring intelligence.

On average it's 37k, it pays itself of completely in 2 years then you have on average double earnings if you ever bothered to look this shit up.
