Because it is the only coin that is decentralized, free, eco-friendly, and is infinitely scale-able. In order to do this, the data transmissions need to be as light weight as possible. We are talking transactions of a few kb at most. Smart contracts are too resource intensive for Nano. It was designed purely to be a cryptocurrency, and the absolute best at that.
