I think this is a big ploy to have a reason to liquidate half of his Amazon holdings and do exactly as you say. He knows tech stock winter is here and that everyone is taking a beating and it's going to get worse. By using this ruse to liquidate half of their holdings, he probably gets around some legal shit, and doesn't arouse suspicion with the market at large when his shares start getting cashed out en masse. Queue tech armageddon, and later on down the road when stock prices have reached rock bottom, he quietly starts to buy as much control of his company as possible.

I think how public this has been is bizarre. They say he's getting a divorce and then within 24 hours the news are announcing he doesn't have a prenup. He says in his Twitter post that him and his wife are best friends and on great terms. Why make all this shit public? Why not just do it privately? They're trying to set the stage to unload MASSIVE quantities of Amazon stock on the sly. If Bezos himself was to, with no warning, unload billions of dollars of Amazon stock people would be tripping over themselves to sell. That's why they're doing this. He could have some sort of legal obligations preventing him from unloading everything as well that he's circumventing by his wife liquidating through divorce. I'm not really sure about the law on that, though.
